Well, I've never actually seen a set of turbo pistons, I thought they had the same crown design though. But it's quite possible that I'm wrong =)

A wet sleeve on the other hand completely replaces the entire exisiting cylinder..... machined to fit. The entire new cylinder is surrounded by coolant. One of the dilemnas with the wet sleeve design is that the sleeve takes all the force! With an open deck design we have no support up top to begin with......... Not good. One of the major problems with our blocks is the open deck design.... If someone made a closed deck design block for our cars it would be a dream!!!!

How do you know they're sleeved? Is it because the cylinders are so close together?

possibly..but i have seen that on honda motors..they bore out the entire sleeve and press fit the new one in. Usually has a block gaurd built into the top of it so it sits down against the top of the motor, turning the open deck design into a closed deck.
Im sure someone out there makes sleeves that butt against each other and the block itself for the Porsche. How could a 951 run a stupid amount of boost with out cracking the wall?

Thats exactly it Zero. Good eye. They are closer than the stock cylinders.
Blue ... Unfortunately our market is behind the import/domestic crowd in regards to closed deck designs..... no such thing as modular integrated deck sleeves for these cars. ![]() PD (performance developments) is making a deck plate for our blocks that runs approximately 1000 bucks...........OUCH. I only know of one project that incorporated an integrated deck like you mention ..........and the idea was to siamese them together. To accomodate the large sleeves.... the original block is overbored and you are left with a very small amount of material on the bottom 1/3 of the cylinder. The liner was supported on the head stud bosses to keep from moving side to side and an interference fit and with the head also providing some vertical clamping as well.... One of the problems is the bottom of the 944 blocks becomes PAPER thin to accomodate large sleeves! Unlike honda and ford blocks. The support can be made at the top but the bottom is relatively thin.
