If I went down to the local junk yard and picked up a DME from a post 85 944, would it work in my 84 944?

I tried putting a later DME ECU in an'84 with the later AFM and it made my car run like a turd. I'll trade you your later ECU for the correct '84 one if you like.

I was just wondering for when I buy the Power Prom chip, I was trying to go around having to buy an adapter board as well. If more people say bad than good things, I'll just buy the adapter board.
Thanks for the help Adam Keep posting though, I wanna hear more opinions or from more people that have tried this.

Adam:
I know that using a late DME and AFM on an early car works, because I've done it. I compared the early and late harness diagrams, as well as early and late DME pin outs, and discovered that an early harness will work with later electronics. I did the swap to an '84 (my first P-Car) because the car had this nasty stumble at about 4 grand under hard acceleration. I later added one of Mr. Wilk's adapters and chips to the original DME. I took me a couple of hours to swap the parts (darned AFM/Air box bolts!), and another hour or so to "fine tune." I drove the car for three years like that. It never failed an emissions test, and always got in the mid to upper 20's for mileage. As for Mr. Wilks' Power Prom, unless you are extremely skilled at making repairs to printed circuit boards, I highly recommend you let Mr. Wilk do the conversion. The problem is not with the adapter or the chip, but with the circuit boards in the DME: They're old. Over time the circuit runs "delaminate" because the epoxy has been exposed to numerous heat cycles and has "over cured." I've been doing electronic repair work for a LONG time, and even though I was using a Pace soldering/desoldering station, I still pulled circuit pads right off the board.

How long does it take for the whole process of taking out the old DME and shipping, intsall of the chip, shipping back to me, and installing the upgraded DME?
I deliver pizza's with my car and I cant go w/o my car for a more than 2 weeks. Thanks Adam

You got me there. Perhaps Mr. Wilk would be a better person to ask. As I recall it took me the better part of a day to make the conversion. This included removing the DME from the car, opening the DME, removing the stock ROMS, repairing the lifted pads, installing the adapter board, plugging in the new ROM, putting the DME back together, and reinstalling the DME. I also recall spending about another hour or so of "tweaking."
