your "excellent" 944 is worth less than one in "good" condition
I just received the April copy of Excellence. Inside the market review it is noted that the 83 and 84 944 is worth less in excellent condition than in good condition.
83 944 Excellent $4400 Good $4450 84 944 Excellent $5050 Good $5063 so a "good" 83 is worth $50 more than an excellent 84 is worth $13 more than an excellent What is the world coming to? Speedy

I have noticed some errors in that issue as well. I have an 1985.5 NA and I noticed an early 1985 in good shape is worth more than an 85.5 in good shape. The updated interior, modifications made the 85.5 more desirable to me as a buyer. Maybe Excellence begs to differ? It was probably just an error though. We all make them.

Another interesting observation is all the 82 and older 924's increased in value this year on average of $300. While the 944 decreased in value by about $200. This makes it easier to afford a newer/nicer 944 than an older 924. It says that any year 924 in excellent condition is worth more than my 83 944 in excellent condition. $4950 for the 77 924 verses $4400 for the 83 944.

sweet so by asking $4000 for my 83 in good cond. I wasnt that far off. I would love to get my hands on an 83 in mint cause in the next 10 years I have feeling it is going to start climbing quite quickly. Everytime some HS kid buys one and totals it the value of our car climbs. Anyone know the number of early 944's imported to the states???

interesting. how much is an '87 auto go for?
lol.. not that i ever expect to get back anywhere near what $ is put into the car. but then i never considered the car an investment, a minor obsession maybe... Any idea how many early or late 944's are left in the states these days?

I'd like to know that too, live. I want to know how many of each color of each year left the factory.
Are DMV records public domain? If so, there might be a way to find out how many of our cars were registered in each year.

It also depends how many are currently on the market for sale, and how long the sellers are willing to wait.
As the price of the N/A's gets near the bottom end of the 951's... I would guess more people would lean twoards the turbo for the same $$$. My eyes about popped out yesterday when I went to rennlist and saw all the 944's~!

Ok... ok... maybe I want the prices to stay down for just 3 more months... I'll have waited almost 9 months to scrape together the money for my first 944, and if prices go up now... GRRRRRR.
Thats ok... someone won't get the news ![]() Probably 3 months from having $5k. *sigh* soon... And if anyone has a black 944... clean body... keep me in mind.

In my experience with older cars in general, they all seem to depreciate over the first 20-24 years.. During that period they are simply considered a "used car" once it gets to the 23-25 year old period, prices fluctuate widely, based upon the reason someone is looking at buying.. daily driver? memory-lane purchaser? or collector? Once it gets past 25 years, prices tend to move up as many of the surviving cars have been canabilized to keep the better examples running (reduces supply) and more collectors start to consider the cars colleccible (increasing demand). At 30 years, the remaining cars are evenly split between parts only cars and collectibles and prices become more in line with collectible cars. By 40 years, the remaining examples reach their highest value and after that point begin to dwindle in value as the demand receeds (because people who remember the cars when they were young are slowly dieing off). A few of the finest examples will retain their high premiums long term, but those are typically ones with a racing heritage or ones which are well known, multiple award winning vehicles... not driven, usually trailered.

One thing Im concerned about is that my car is not a garage queen nor ever will be or even have the chance without putting serious money into a better quality paint job, so my question is: Once my car hits the 24 -25 year old range will there even be a market for a classic car daily driver? Or by that age will everyone only be focusing on the pristine models thereby forcing the price of the "not so pristine" cars down as there would be no demand?

Again, based upon my experience, there will be a market for the daily drivers during the 25-29 year period as hobbiests enter the market looking to do "rolling restorations". Their concerns, at least with foreign cars, look for cars which are unmolested, that is, ones closest to original with few major changes from original specs. American muscle cars seem to accept even more modifications. Porsche's are somewhat similiar to American Iron in that racing modifications seem to add value, rather than reduce values for a "rolling restoration". Another plus is that the Porsche name is an ongoing name here in the states. Concours level will become more important as the car hits 30yrs and the fewer remaining examples are more highly valued... similiar to the 356 bathtubs are now. For example, the value of my mini (40 yrs old) tripled once BMW reintroduced the name in the states & has "racing mods", while my MG's have moved up less in value during the same time period & are "factory". (The mini & the midget are both in the higher end/occassional driver range, while the MGB is a "Trailer Queen" and probably gets less than 100 miles a year on it. Just from the trailer to the show field and back.) |
