ball joint
Trying to rebuild my aluminum control arm ball joints. My instructions say to place a large socket over the balljoint in the vice. I assume that is to apply pressure to control arm, not to the ball joint? Seems to take alot of pressure from the vice. Also, any tips for removing the circlip?

Hey Taz, I just did this last weekend.
Use a 3/4 drive 32mm or smaller socket on the ball joint side. The ball joint shaft fits right into the 3/4 drive hole. Then use a 1/2 dive 14mm socket on the snap ring side and squeeze with a vise or c-clamp. Use a pointed tip tool and a flat screw driver to pry out the special spring wire lock. You will notice that the wire ends are angled in opposite ways. Try to pry out the one that is angled inward with the pointed tool and wedge in the flat screw driver when the tip is out of the groove. If it is the regular snap ring with holes, that will be easy to remove using a snap ring pliers. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the response.
I got my passenger side ball joint disassembled, and my control arm was ruined (I think SoCal warned about this possibility). There is a crack and some obvious damage. I called 944 ecology and after discussing parts availability, I think I'm simply swapping in my steel control arms from my 924S. If anyone can explain why this is a bad idea, let me know.

I don't think they will fit, but to verify that give Markus Blaszak (http://www.blaszakprecision.com/) a holler.
He fabs steel control arms for racing applications.
