Navigation Systems and speakers...who's done them?

Im looking to put in a set of 4x6 Infinity plate speakers. Will these fit flushly? I dont want them to stick out or have mounting issues. Is there a speaker anyone can recommend that is a direct replacement with no problems or modifications? Also looking to add a navigation system but I dont want the flip out screen. Was thinking of mounting it on the dash where that plastic grilll piece is just about the center a/c vents. Has anyone ever installed one here, how does that piece come off? Any other cool custom ways to do a navigation system? Thanks!

I have Pioneer 4x6's up front and Infinity 4x6 plates in the rear. I recall trying to mount the Infinity's up front and them being too deep. I'm guess this will be the same on an early 944.

Front 4x6's are really hit or miss in relation to clearance depth. Check and re-check the speaker dimension. I bought some (great sounding) 4x6 Polks, had to devise spacers out of foam core to mount them correctly. Look decent, but can't fit the porsche oem grill over them.

Nav system.... only 944 I've seen with one (well, it was an lcd tv actually, same diff) was on cardomain.com - it looked professionally done, just not to my liking.

the infinitys wont fit flush. I have a pair in my car. Now i dont mind them not being flush, because i like my sound more than that 1/2 foot of space i dont ever see.

get an ipaq pda and mapopolus navigation cd with card...will cost less than a garman gps unit with comparable screen size and u will get many other features. i have this setup, fantastic operation and i mounted it using a flexible metal rod-mount with bracket that u can buy from any good cellular phone retailer.

Seaboltman, do you have any pics of your speakers being mounted? I know the infinites are awesome speakers and would prefer really good sound quality. I saw the nav setup on cardomain and liked it so that's what gave me the idea. How big is that ipaq setup?

ipaq = roughly the size of a palm pilot, maybe slightly larger. IMO, go for one with a transflective screen (TFT), direct sun on its screen wont be that much of an issue.

Paul's idea is a good one. much more versatile than a garmin. mapopolus and avantgo on it and everything around will be at your fingertips (restaurants, movie times, etc..)

I tried Infinity plates and they would not fit, but the Boston Acoustic plates did. Sound great.

Will look into the boston acoustics then. I like the Ipaq idea. How much do they normally run and what do the programs mapopolus and avantgo sell for?

alpine type s speakers fit nicely being they come with plastic spacers that you can tuck behind the door panel and youll never know they're there one the covers are on. The sound quality is good also, I have 4 of them.

oh ya thats the other thing, they didnt fit. I had to cut out the bottom of the mounts. A little extra work, but worth it. Unfortunantly, i cant get pics because im at school and the car is... at home in a heap of twisted metal (still have yet to resolve my recent crash, and its not looking like a good outcome)
