BIG question

Sorry about this but here goes:

Can anyone provide a complete list of everything I must buy for an engine rebuild?

I mean every last flange, seal, plug etc.

Assume I do not need new pistons, but everything else for a rebuild.

Thank a lot.

GHEN

yeah, that is a BIG question.... someone just posted asking about this on rennlist, do a search, decided that a rebuild kit was the best route...

also, do your clutch et.c while you can
and replace all hoses etc.

But there is no list of what comes in it.

Thanks though.

A WHOLE BUNCH OF STUFF!!! THEN WHEN YOU THINK YOU'VE GOT IT ALL YOU WILL NOT. I now that doesn't help, but what you have to ask yourself is do you want to really get it right or just get it running again. You WILL catch yourself saying "well I might as well do that while I have it apart".

Really depends on how deep you want to rebuild it. Generally a headset and pan set will contain most gaskets/seals. But then you need all of the little pesky parts such as balance shaft o-rings, plugs, etc....A rebuild is not one of those things that you can plan exactly right. More like set aside a week or 2, make room in your work area, and go through your motor to see what needs replacing and what does not. and dig into it. Take your time and things will come out right. Have a good manual that breaks everything down to the nitty gritty would be a good start. Heck, I still have the OLD Euroselect Porsche parts book for water cooled Porsches
which breaks down the parts pretty good.

I have known some that have rebuilt the 44 motor while the block was IN the car. Just removed the heads and the oil pan. Not the way to do it IMO. Takes too much time. Seen others just install a head set and called it a rebuilt motor.

Perhaps I should have phrased my question a little better.

I am having my engine re-built by an experienced Porsche mechanic.

I have a great friend (different guy) from whom I get a very good discount on Porsche parts.

The mechanic has quoted me 2 prices (at my request) One price is the complete price, the other is the labor only price.

I was hoping if I could figure out what parts I need I could figure out if it was more economical to buy the parts myself, or just pay the mechanic for the whole shebang.

Leaks down the bottom, valve problems up top, history too murky to let me feel good about anything but a total re-build.

I plan on driving it for a looong time, so the cost of the build will be amortized over more than a couple of years.

Plus the car makes me grin when I drive it, I love it too much to let it die.

What you could do is to purchase the major items you know you will need upfront to save on parts. Then as time goes by your mechanic should hopefully keep you in the loop as to what is required next.

If you do not have access to a nice engine breakdown of parts with related part numbers I would be happy to scan a few pages and post for you. Keep in mind that many of these part numbers have probably been superseded but I am sure Porsche would have that information already.

Things that come to mind are, ok here we go:

Head gasket
Cam housing gasket
Valve stem seals
Rear cam housing gasket
water outlet gasket
water pump & gasket (might as well put in a new one with all of the rollers/tensioners)
Temp sensor bracket gasket
Valve Guides?
Valve springs if they are not up to snuff
crank seals front and rear
balance shaft bearings, seals and o rings (clear flat o ring that easily breaks). Be VERY careful removing the balance shaft bearing caps as they break easily and are matched (cut) from the block. Very very hard to locate another EXACT cut piece. I once went through over 13 in a salvage yards box of them to find one that worked!
Main and rod bearings
Fuel injector seals
New o rings/washers for regulators
oil cooler gasket kit
Engine mounts?
Clutch?
piston rings
connecting rod bearings
any of those hoses underneath the manifold that are a pain to get to once installed
O rings for oil filler tube assembly, oil pressure reg. ,

plus all belts, hoses, etc...

Sorry but that is all I can think of off the top of my head-been 7+ years since a 944 engine rebuild . Did about 7-9 of them over my 44 experience. (not the same car of course) Did some overflow work for a local Porsche garage. They did not care to work on 44's so I grabbed those for an easy (yeah right) buck.

Since the engine will be out, time to grab some solvent and clean clean clean that bad boy as you may not (hopefully) get another shot at reaching some of those spots.

Like I said I would be happy to email you some pics of the engine breakdowns for different years with pics

Lee,

Thank you very much, that is very cool of you.

I don't think I'll need the pics, as I am not doing the re-build, but I appreciate the offer.

Thanks again,

GHEN

GHEN - you need to get your hands on a copy of the porsche PET catalouge.. breaks everything in the car down by group with all the part #s..

shows exploded views of all mechanical parts, clicking on a part brings up part #, etc... very handy

If you think you have everything you will need, you'll still end up having to buy a few parts. I'm starting with a complete rebuild kit from Vertex, and then as I build, seeing what else I need.

The thread on rennlist I believe was mine, and the general consensus was to just buy a rebuild kit, and go from there. I have lots of time, so I can afford to wait while parts come in.

Now, you are presuming that your cylinders will be in good shape, which mine were not. Something to check on.

There is a 944 engine on e-bay, says it is rebuilt by Broadfoot. The current high but is $975 and supposedly comes with a 12 month warranty. They want an additional $800 which is refunded when you send them your rebuildable old engine.

Just a thought...
