OK, with out getting to crazy, A MAF or Mass air flow sensor sits in the air stream, Inside the MAF is a samll filiment that the ECU holds at a specific temp. The more air that passes over the filiment the cooler it gets, thus needing more current to keep it at the fixed temp. The Ecu "see's" the current change and adjust the fuel mixture as needed. Only down side to a MAF is
1. it sits in the air stream, this can cause some (very small) restritions in the intake.

2. IF a MAF sensor sits too close to the turbo intake the air pulsations from the turbo can screw it up.

3. I have heard that if you over oil a K&N air filter some of the oil can build up on the filiment causuing poor readings.

MAp sensor or Manifold absolute pressure sensor, This sensor measures the pressure change in the intake manifold. It does not sit in the air stream, It can be screwed into the intake manifold or it can run off a vacumm port that is attached to the intake manifold. Down sides to a MAP

1. I have heard of people having problems tuning in a aftermarket MAP sensor setup, Not sure if it is Software or Map sensor related or just BS

2. Also from what I understand a ECU needs to do a little extra work (calculations) with a MAP sensors thus being a Nano sec. slower to respond (this is what I have read not sure if it is true)

Both the MAP and a MAF are way better then the stock AFM setup, IF your gonna go this rout talk to DannoXYZ He has MAP and MAF kits and can also do custom chips thus eleminating the need for a signal masager like the ARC2.

I dont believe there realy is a big difference, Both meter air comming in to a engine, they just do it differently, My opionion is that a MAP sensor is better for a Turbo and a MAF sensor is better for a NA, I have no technical proof of this but its just the way I feel.

Her is a pic of a MAF sensor

There are manu different setups for a MAF the pic above is the Huntley RAcing MAF

This is the MAF installed, Only down side that Im sure many of you are going to FLAME is that its sucking air from the hot engine bay, This is soon to be fixed with a custom CAI

Hoped I helped

Yea I know, I'm a slacker, But that pic was right about when I took it off the road for repairs so it didn't get driven that much with a dirty filter. It will be clean and shinny Just for you after I put the motor back in

Kudos to Fast924S for the 411 on MAP and MAP. And SoCal, come on -- anyone with a little experience with K&N knows that a little dirt on the surface is a good sign that it is in optimal operating condition. When it is totally or very black, it is clogged. K&N should not be over oiled, and should be allowed to run for a number of miles (approx 10k) before you look to clean and refresh.
