Thanks for all the repies. I think I am going to enrole in a course at a highschool or colege. I took an autobody course a few years ago and really enjoyed it and learnt how to weld poorly. I think the biggest problem I have is time, Spending 4 hours doing something a mechanic will charge me $80 to do is a tough one. I have 2 kids, the wife and 3 cars, and work expects me do actually do my job so there arent many hours left. Oh well.
As to my original problem with the starter, the car is now safely back in my garage. The solenoid on the 1 year old starter was cracked and caused the problems. I purchased a used starter for $100 and labour was another $80. As a side bonus I also have an extra starter (minus the solenoid)
