Oil pressure sender

When I turn the ignition on, the red warning light for the oil pressure sender doesn't come on. When the car is running the gauge reads 5 bar and then it goes down to 2-1 bar. Sometimes the needle is "jumping" around 1-3 bar. If the engine is hot and the car is at idle the needle will drop to less than 1 bar and the red warning light will come on. This is perhaps a stupid question, but do I need a new oil pressure sender? The oil level is at the top of the two marks on the dip stick so it does have enough oil.

Sounds like you need to check your oil pressure regulator. Year and model helps to ID these problems.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

The OPR has an o-ring that tends to harden over time. Also a few have found the piston inside it to be sticking from parts of the o-ring.

Other causes can be a cracked or loosening oil pick tube. If your engine is noisy when you start it up cold worn rod and crank bearings could be the problem. What brand oil filter are you using? Some of the off brands don't have the check valve that keeps the oil system primed.

I'll check the OPR and the o-ring. I'm using a Mahle oil filter should it should be ok.
