You could try a substitute. I've been using one since 1995 in two cars.

I am also in the need of some R 12. I have been looking on Ebay, which seems to have plenty for sale. I would recommend checking out what is available there.

you've gotta be certified to buy it if you can find it.
certification isn't that tuff.

Description This is the good stuff just fresh out of the case to take the picture. I will charge you the actual UPS shipping cost which will SAVE YOU MONEY. Purchaser must provide proof of EPA section 609 certification, You can email it or mail it to me. I will comply with all local, state, and federal laws regarding the sale of this/these items. there's probably some of the offers that do it without certification but risk a fine.

You can get EPA certified on-line for $15: http://www.imaca.org/. It involves taking a couple dozen open-book multiple choice exam - it takes maybe an hour of your time. You can print the certification directly from their website.
Also, I've made maybe three R-12 purchases on eBay and have been asked for the certification only once.

is there any advantage of doing the r-13 conversion as opposed to re-charging with r-12? I dialed up the a/c yesterday for the first time this summer and was less than impressed. Last year the a/c was adequate, but not cold enough to be nipply. So the question is, recharge with r-12, or do the upgrade?

resale trumps the epa.
when napa, carquest, et al, were selling it, requiring the certification, that's not resale i guess? i bet the epa thinks that's "some kind of wonderful".

These are retail sellers. NAPA et all don't need the certs as THEY are the resellers.
