engine bogs at 2,000rpm...what's prob?

My '86 944 Turbo is sick. A few days ago I noticed it was idling high (around 2-2,300) but ignored it. Then today it started bogging (almost stalling like it was starved for gas) at 2,000 rpm, would fall to 1,000 and idle. Playing with the throttle I could get several well timed blips to get momentum in engine speed to carry through the dead zone to 3,000 rpm when it would pick up and rev again. So it's not a gas problem I guess. But as soon as I eased off and the revs dropped under 3, it would 'die' and drop to 1,000. Obviously without the 2-3 range it won't drive, so I walked 5 miles home, grabbed the trailer and now have to do something. What's up? Is it the computer? If so, can I just replace chips, or do I need a new box? What else could it be? Any help would be appreciated...thanks.

Check your vaccum lines, your tps and your reference sensors. Also when was the last time you did a tune up

unplug your trottle position sensor and see if it runs better. it may not idle like this but if that is the problem the dead spot should go. my car did this and i barely made it home i think i payed around 60 dollars for a new tps and it cured the problem.

It was a bad TPS sensor. A little difficult to get the inner screw out, but an easy and relatively cheap fix, thankfully. Thanks for all your help.
