i was just wondering what type of transmissions could be used in a 944 without major modifications like floor pan, or replacing the gas tank and what not?

Other 944 transaxles. The early and late 944 transaxles have different mounting setups too, so while it might be possible to put a 924 transaxle into an early 944, it would be more difficult to do with the late 944.
There's no real option of any other transmission since the 944 uses a transaxle with the differential inside the transaxle case. You definitely can't fit a transmission in front, just behind the engine.

You can buy different gears, though.
Might feel like a big difference, depending on what you do. I swapped out 3rd-6th gears, from my 968, to something shorter. You could do a R&P thing, too. If you're interested in my stock gears let me know. Jason
