14.5 V regulator OK?
I came across this aftermarket regulator by accident. There has been talk of a 14.4V regulator being a good thing for the 944 charging system. Any comments, consequences on going .1V higher?
Thanks

isn't the regulator built into the alternator? are you having charging system problems now?

The regulator, which includes the brushes, is a module mounted on the alternator and is very easy to replace. I have charging problems after cleaning all the charging cable connections and grounds in the sense that with the headlights on and the cooling fan running, the charging voltage drops to around 13.7V, where it doesn't recharge the battery in a reasonable time.
There has been discussion here before about using an aftermarket regulator that comes set to 14.4V instead of the stock regulator which comes set to 14.1V. Now comes this other one set to 14.5V and I wonder if that .1V makes any difference.

Gene, that should be fine as the regulator has a circuit that cuts back on voltage as heat increases.
The adjustable voltage regulators I sell are probably the discussions you have seen before. It comes set from the factory at 14.4 and you can adjust it up and down off that by 0.5 volts. I tell people to leave it set at 14.4v. I doubt that regulator will hurt your battery but make sure it is for the proper slip ring diameter. 0.1v may make a difference in some situations but really the only thing you are risking is the battery, which is cheap if you cook it or shorten the life. |

more than 13.8 when the engine is at operating temps makes for more heat and batteries don't like excessive heat and fail prematurely if charged at 2 hi of a rate.
