1984 timing and balance BELTS help

under normal circumstances i would just go for it but after research and reading i'm concerned .
i am what i consider a well above average weekend worrier , ive done rebuilds and MAJOR repairs on alot of cars but the timing belt water pump etc. on my 1984 944 will be the biggest thing ive had to do on this car , seems like theres alot to it and im now scared off , is this ( water pump and new timing and balance belts ) something i CAN do myself DO i really need the p9201 ? any info on specs " how to " or " never do this " kinda stuff would be great . if i didnt poke around the net for info i would already be back on the road , or have a bunch of bent valves by now , but now im looking for some advice and help thanks in advance

Just doing the belts and pullies is no biggie. You can replace the water pump without removing the rear cover IF you cut the top half off at the water pump. Then most of the time you will need to replace the balance and crank seals too. This means the entire rear cover needs to be removed.

A flywheel lock is a good idea as you will need to put over 150 foot pounds on the crank bolt to get the pullies off to get to the seal and remove the cover.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Check out Arnnworx, buy his tool kit, with the kricket tensioner, balance shaft wrench, flat 27mm wrench and flywheel lock. You won't regret it. Once you're armed with that and a basic set of tools, go to town!
It isn't hard or complicated, just a bit time consuming, and you need to keep your head on straight while you do it, or you might find yourself going back to put things together the right way.

Between Pelican and Clark's Garage, you can and will get through this!
