Exclamation Urgent help needed - engine missing lost power

Hi Folks,

On my way back from getting a new fan relay, the car started sputering when I got on the gas and lost power. It seems like it's missing or something, but there's no backfiring or anything.

It feels like when you lose a head gasket, but there's no antifreeze coming out the exhaust, and the oil isn't milky, so
I'm thinking my timing belt slipped............

Ideas?

This is now my primary mode of transport

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Some....hard to put a figure on it but I'd say 25%.

It starts and idles without making any strange noises. When I pull on the throttle cable, it goes "prrrp...prrrp...prrrp" instead of "prrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrp" (it's hard to type noises LOL)

Check your plugs and plug wires.
Check your distributor cap.
Check your rotor.
Check for vacuum leak.
Check your fuel pressure.

There might be more...

So you don't think it's a timing belt issue? Phew, that's great news

I just checked the plugs, they're all fine, and the wires, cap and rotor are all new so should be ok.

Vaccuum leak is something I didn't even think of, so I'll check and see what I can find. If it's not, what else do you think it might be?

Thanks for your help, it's trully appreciated

Why do you think the timing belt may have slipped? Is it due for replacement?

Id check the vaccum lines.... when i bought my car some of the lines were leaking/disconnected . After fixing them all up I was very happy with the power the motor was putting out .

Here's a thought...has it been raining lots where you are? The reason I ask is that mine did what you're describing (if I understand your symptoms) and it turned out to be moisture in the throttle switch. How does the car run if you disconnect the throttle switch? It's located underneath the throttle body and the connector is easy to get to. Unplug it, see what happens.

I thought it might be the timing belt because it's the same symptom I had in a Chrysler Turbo a couple of years ago.

The belt *is* due for retentioning

Just spoke with the Porsche shop owner I've been buying parts from and pestering with questions like "how do I do this?" and "how do I do that?"- he's a great guy, definately reccomend to anyone in DE/MD/lower PA - Anyway, he said there's no way it could be the timing belt, because even if it slipped 1 tooth, it wouldn't run period, and suggested that the AFM may have an issue. Guess I'll find out in a few mins - have a spare one here

Yes there was a lot of rain a couple of days ago, so I'll be sure to check that out also.

Thanks again to everyone for your help
