Question Cam Regrind

I always wanted to make a cam regrind for my '83 944. Is a cam regrind and degree a good idea for a car its spark time is controlled by DME?

You could do a redgrind and get it back to factory specs or do a performance grind. I have heard bad things about the welded material breaking off after regrinds. I know WEB cams and JM do cams. The whole degreeing in a Cam on our 8v 944 is not doable, You cant get a good spot to run a dial indicator on the lobes because the cam is in the housing, Also you would need a adjustable cam gear to help get it exactly on target. Do a search there is a topic on cam degreeing Im sure you will find helpful. To correct what you said above, When you are degreeing in a CAM it has nothign to do with ignition timing its all valve timing, unless you where worried since the dist. is run of the cam but that is also where a adjustable cam gear would help. Anyway Im sure you would notcie a difference if you swapped a performance cam in.

Get a later model 944 cam. It has a longer duration on the exhaust than the early (83) cam. Adds a couple of horses.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

I got a nice "sporty" cam from WEB cams and now the car has an awesome lumpy idle along with noticeably better performance at higher RPM. I would recommend it just to get the cool idle and sound...of course the added performance is always a plus
