Today I put in a vacuum fitting i had been missing, the check valve on the fuel pressure regulator and damper. I EXPECTED the idle, which had been pretty uneven, to at least get a little more stable, but NOOO it couldn't be that simple
![]() As soon as I got on the highway I knew something was wrong. On 75% throttle, it ran like it was on 50% or less, and there was this noise from the exhaust like "bum bum bum bum", and the car was almost bouncing. When I got to where i could park (work) after a few minutes, I parked and put my hand behind the exhaust. with every audible "bump" there was a pulse in the exhaust stream. No need to worry, I'll just take the dern thing out! Of course, it still idled like it was, bumping and shaking the car. 4 hours later, on the way home, it did it again, with a more noticeable decrease in throttle response, and the throttle surged to its normal level every few seconds under 75%. When i took the old check valve out, the stem had broken off in the fuel regulator side's line, and while fishing it out i accidentally broke it up, but i had thought i had gotten it all out. Could it be clogging the regulator, or does the flow go in the opposite direction? thanks for reading my little story-- if you didn't, here's the gist: put in fuel regulator check valve, idle went screwy, car bounces and surges at more than 50% throttle, and throttle response is in the pisser.

NO WAY IM EDITING THAT POST
Went out with my dad and fired it up again, put the valve on, goosed the throttle for a minute. Ran like normal ![]() WHY though, why? Also noticed a ticking under the hood which sped up with the rpm's, by the P end of the cam cover. Lifter maybe?

post in here again!
idle is at 1200 rpm now, just chugging away happily. in addition to this i'm super pissed as I replaced the odometer gear today and the odometer still doesn't work. TAKING THE DASH OFF AGAIN TOMORROW however, i did put a brand spanking new guage cover/ lense on, and it made a huge difference in the brightness of the instrument lights. maybe it wasn't worth the cool $95 but it sure is nice.

car should be idling at just below 1000 (950 or so).

You have to jumper the test plug B to C before you adjust the idle.
