Radiator Fan Not Working...
I have an '83 auto and just recently the raditor fan on the right side stopped working. I noticed when the car got really hot one day on the trip home from work. I reached in to spin it with my hand and it would barely spin, almost seized up. I replaced the fan but it still won't come on when the car warms up. I checked all the fuse, all good. but I'm not sure what relay to check. I can't seem to make sense of the wiring diagram because of the two fans and they're called something different. (in stead of fan 1 and fan 2)...Not sure what else to check...Anybody BTDT...
TIA, Mike D. |

Try seeing if the second fan goes on when you turn on the air conditioner. If it does, then you should probably replace the thermofan switch. It's a quick change and it's not that expensive either.

Two fans, two fuses, two relays. Temp switch on radiator with one set of contacts.
Check fuses 3 and 5 on the 9 fuse panel. Count from the door. http://944-world.com/earlyfusepanel.html Also check relay #1 and relay #3. Bet it's a fuse as your old fan seized up (front ball bearing). Later 6 blade fans have a sealed ball bearing. Earlys don't.

All fuses are good. Is there a trick to getting the relays out? tried pulling the #1 relay and felt like I was going to pull the whole board out..
Maybe I'll just check/change the Thermo Time Switch... -Mike D.

I've bent the tip on a small diameter long shank screwdriver so as to get under the edge of the relays to pry up. Otherwise I tend to pull the covers off.
