gas cap question
Had to buy a new gas cap because my old one failed the emission inspection. The new one is here but came without a key cylinder. Is there a way to remove the old key cylinder from the old cap so that I can still use my ignition key to lock/unlock it? Thanks in advance.

Yes there is, and it was kind of a PITA to do. I do not recall exactly how I did it other than it involved having the key in the lock and prying with a small screwdriver. I had to do the same thing about 2 years ago, so it isn't fresh in my memory, but I do seem to recall I basically mauled the old cap to get the lock out.

I agree, there is a good way to do that, providing you purchased another OEM gas cap. I can't remember right off hand where I saw the procedure written up at, but I'm pretty sure its out there somewhere. If I run accross it, I'll post ya the location. Have you searched thru the FSM, tech forums at paragon, pelican, and Clark's garage? Its gotta be in there somewhere. I remember making a switch on one of my gas caps, some time ago.

Suggestion .... Take it to a lock smith.
Though I have not had the same issue - I did use a lock smith when my 968 Cab arrived without keys for the rear storage lockers. The lock Pro had access to a web site that helped him take the lock apart and creat a new key for it. Worth a try ?

Or you can do what I did: Buy the $5 "VW" non-locking gas cap from NAPA and use it exactly once a year, when the car is smog-checked. The rest of the time, I use the original gas cap. I figure that since my charcoal canister is gutted and vents to the atmosphere, it doesn't matter if the gas cap seals.

Thanks to all who replied. Here's what I finally did--put the old cas cap in the vise and had at it with the hack saw. I was careful to stay away from the metal key cylinder but finally got all the outer stuff off. I will say that the little bugger is tough. There is a little u-shaped retainer at the base of the old one. Just pull it out. Once the key cylinder was out, you could see how it needed to slide in the new one so that the thing would engage. Anyhow, works fine. Thanks again.
