Lightbulb Wayne, I'm Beggin' Ya!!

Wayne, I was flipping through 101 PROJECTS FOR YOUR PORSCHE 911 the other day in the bookstore, and I have to say it was pretty damn cool. The only problem is... I don't own a Porsche 911. Or a BMW 3-Series.

What I'm trying to say, is that I think there is a pretty big market out there for a 101 PROJECTS FOR YOUR PORSCHE 944...

I'm sure there is some interest, but nobody cares about these cars so they won't do it. I've already made a post like this a while back. Maybe you could search for it. I don't remember what it said.

I guess it doesn't hurt to ask though.

I did a quick search, and one of the threads that came up was a post by Wayne about a year and a half ago, right before 101 PROJECTS was published. He said he would love to do a version of the book about 944s (and by 944s he means 924/924T/924S/944/944S/944T/944S2/968), but the publisher said there wouldn't be enough demand.

Apparently, on the West Coast, whenever there is a Porsche event, the 944 turnout is embarrassing. This is where they get their demand numbers...

... maybe Wayne and the publishers should come to Northeast events... I'd say that the number of 944s attending rivals that of 911s. At CVR PCA events, autocrosses, and even the RennSport Reunion at Limerock, 944 owners proudly made their presence known.

Well then, why don't we write one. Lord knows we all have something to contribute.

I'd be willing to set up a wiki. The pelican articles and clarks garage are great, but I think a wiki would be the best way to get a lot more experts to do some quicker write-ups

you know, a wiki! like www.wikipedia.org - It basically lets anyone edit or write any article. So... If I start a general procedure on something and AFJ sees some detail I overlooked, it's easy for him to go in there and fix it.

I think it'd be the best way to get a lot of people to write stuff... and, in theory, since anyone can edit, it would be as accurate as possible.

I have webspace, and will set up a site tonight if there's some interest. For now, I'll park it at http://944.e4industries.net (nothing there now), but if it takes off, i'll register a domain for it.

There is already a fairly large article on Wikipedia itself...

Maybe we (a few of us regulars) really should just bite the bullet and write one ourselves... I would love to see a "944 Bible" that combines the wisdom found in Clark's Garage, the Haynes Manual, Paragon, and a "projects"-syle upgrading section a la Wayne's book.

Actually, I think this is a great idea. If I had the contact information for the publisher of "101 Projects...", I'd contact them myself.

I'd contribute or do an article for the proposed comprehensive 944 book, based on my relatively limited knowledge. But, I'm kind of at school right now. I have a month off around Christmas with nothing better to do, though.

Thats more technical and historical. I think what Bryan meant was wiki in the sense that it is a collaborative document that anyone can edit, add to, link to, etc... Take the concept of wikipedia, but instead of one article about the 944, the whole site is 944 related.

Bet we can come up with 102 projects even.

Okay, I've been mulling it over during dinner, and here is what envision for the 944 Bible:

Section 1: Overview with Marque history, model change timeline, etc. (a la Peter Morgan's "Original" series)
Section 2: Troubleshooting common issues (a la, but more complete than, the Hayne's Manual)
Section 3: (this is what would separate this book from many others) Overview of different 944 systems (such as "suspension" and "brakes"), breaking down into sub-sections relating to different components (such as "sway bars" and "strut inserts") which describes not only WHAT THE COMPONENTS DO WITHIN THE SYSTEM, but also WHAT MIGHT BE SYMPTOMS of the component's failure. This would be followed by detailed description of not only REPAIR PROCEDURE, but also UPGRADE OPTIONS.

So, for example, a part of Section 3 might be broken down thusly:
3A) SUSPENSION - 3A1) Sway Bars - 3A1a) What sway bars do
3A1b) Sway bar sizes on the 944 series
3A1c) Common symptoms of swaybar failure
3A1d) Swaybar repair procedure
3A1e) Common swaybar upgrades (types, sizes, etc.)
3A) SUSPENSION - 3A2) Struts - 3A2a) What struts do
3A2b) Different 944 strut types
3A2c) Common symptoms of strut failure
3A2d) Strut repair procedures, front and rear
3A2e) Common strut upgrades (types, adjustables, etc.)

Section 4: Indexes of dimensions, tolerances, common bolt sizes, option codes, etc.

What do you guys think? Am I missing anything obvious?

My boss writes books for O'Reilly... not sure a computer nerd oriented company would want to touch a book about 944s, but I could ask him anyway.
