that ain't a 924...it's a 911.. well sort off
but it's definately not a 924... look at the windshield , and the frontwheels are to close to the driver to be a 924

I'm currently rebuilding a spare motor I have for my 924, I'll note the parts still in progress for you. I plan on assembling the motor over the winter and having it in the car next summer:

Headwork - European Motorworks "Big Valve" conversion(complete):

- 44mm Stainless Steel Intake Valves
- 35mm Stainless Steel Exhaust Valves
- Port and Polish
- Racing Guides
- RaceSport Valve Springs and Retainers

Cam - Stage 1 (Complete):

- 233 x 470
- this allows me to retain the stock injection

Engine Block (In Progress):

- just a hot tank cleaning and prepping the cylinder walls for pistons, I am not getting too crazy with an overbore or stroker

Pistons (Complete):

- Mahle 9.3:1 euro pistons

Miscellaneous:

- Audi 5000 throttle body - I'm running this on my current setup
- Cat delete - I'm running this on my current setup

So there you go, a pretty basic rebuild with a few minor tweaks. Everything I am doing is pretty much tried and tested 924 2.0 stuff which should show a few small gains. Base is 125hp with the euro pistons, the head work, cam and miscellaneous items should yeild a few more horses. Some of the other guys on 924Board.org have done some much more wild things, like supercharging....

The current issue of Excellence magazine has a nice article about the 924 gts. If I recall correctly the hp is around 275, that thing must be a rocket...

i was just thinking , the green turd needs a some rust panel replacement and a new paint job.. might look into some CGT body kit

but it would be a horrible poser car if no power is under the bonnet
looks like 150 is the top for the N/A 924.. and only at great cost
i'm not really into turboing...

guess i'll stick to the 911 for the real power fix and leave the green 924 alone, it's a good beater...maybe eventually fix the rust , with FG fenders, normal 924 size then ... if you can't add power... might as well loose weight , no?

I'd like to see the same thing. I want to see somebody accurately replicate the 933 (D Production) motor and detail what they did. Some of the info I have is accurate as to what was done, but some is vague and hardly credible. I believe it was a standard 924 block with a tweeked 931 head. It had Kugelfischer fuel injection typically, or some folks ran Weber TBs. That info is all easy to find. On the other hand pistons and rods are a mystery. I have read they were possibly as weird as Cossie Vega slugs. I have also read they were pretty much whatever the builder could get to work and that is why there isn't much info about them. If Porsche built the first 16 in the factory, why aren't the part numbers listed anywhere? I have also read in a few places that the head wasn't a run of the mill 931 head, but don't have specifics on that.

In any event, the motors were not likely streetable, porbably had a lumpy idle, but made a lot more HP than stock, like close to 180bhp which is what, like 50 or 60 more than stock.

why would they have a lumpy idle? the mechanical injection is pretty good gear if well tuned... way better than CIS , or even early EFI...

my 911 doesn't have a lumpy idle either, that's also high strung engine although it is a flat engine , so it is more balanced , but that's more a vibration thing , i don't think that has much to do with how well they idle

Yeah, I've seen all that, as well as many Panarama and Excellence articles about the 933. If you look at the links you sent you will see there is nothing listed, at least that I could find, regarding pistons or connecting rods. The only info related to them at all is a listing for rings.

It may have a lumpy idle due to the cam profile. The Kugelfischer FI has nothing to do with it. It also may require better than pump gas since the compression ratio is kind of high.

Here's a pair of DP 924s. I shot this photo at Mid-America Raceway in Wentzville, MO in 1982.

It probably has as very high idle as well.

They really had get very radical with the cam to get the max out of the engine, because the Haron style head (where the chamber is in the piston) really can't be made to flow very well. The problems are...

1)That the valves are too small
2)You can fit larger valves, but then they get shrouded by cylinder walls.
3) You can increase the lift and duration (which is what they did in the DP 924's), but you find that it's hard to keep the CR up and still have adequate flow for inertia tuning during overlap.

The result was that they got a measely 180 HP out of a 2 liter motor, and a very narrow power band to go with it. Compare that with a 2 liter 911 motor which got 160 HP in normal S trim, and could be pumped up to a fairly brawny 210-220 HP with a rev range from 5000 - 8000 RPM.

They guys who turned the 924 into a D-Prod winner really did manage to make a "silk purse out of a sows ear".

BTW - One of the "Factory" 924 DP cars still runs in SCCA GT3 regionals up here in New England.

But with the 931 head, the CC is moved into the head - not entirely, perhaps, but somewhat.

I can say for sure that if I were looking to do a hot 924 NA motor (or turbo, in fact, which I will) that I'd use modern EFI. Wouldn't have instantly made that 933 motor streetable for some of the reasons noted above, but would definitely make it a lot more manageable. I'd certainly choose that over carbs, and carbs over trying to replicate the Kugelfischer injection. Just not worth the hassle any other way.

But hey, motor technology has improved a lot in the past 30 years - and a good portion of those improvements could in fact be incorporated into the 2.0L for a decent streetable motor.
