Dash Electronics

I'm pretty sure I have a loose or corroded connection behind the dash gauges. When I got the car, the odometer didn't work. I pulled the gauge cluster and inspected the odometer, I didn't see anything wrong so I reinstalled it. The odometer started working again. It worked until I tried to reset the mileage counter.

This weekend I was driving the p-car and as I pulled out of the driveway, I noticed the speedometer was not working. I tapped on the gauge cluster and it came back to life.

When idling, my oil pressure gauge bounces around quite a bit (between 3 and 5).

I figure the connections on the back of the gauge cluster could stand a cleaning. Any suggestions on the best way to clean the contacts? I can't think of a way to clean the contacts on the harnesses that hook up to the back of the gauges.

Just make sure all of the srews are tight (do not overtighten) and clean them with rubbing alcohol.

Did you ever take care of this? On my car, it seems as though the speedo needle is "sticky". It will work with a little tap, or after a little higher speeds.... I noticed the Odometer still rolls even if the needle doesnt move though.....

Any tips or hints?

You can try a pencil eraser or some fine emery cloth.

I get that same problem on occasion with the speedometer. I cleaned all the contacts with a pencil eraser but still have the issue. Frankly its not big enough a concern that i want to take everything apart again.

I pulled and cleaned all of the contacts with rubbing alcohol. The oil pressure is much less "bouncy", but the odometer still does not work. At some point I will pull it again and check the gears on the odometer (I did this the time before last and they all checked out).

Contact cleaner pen, $5 at Radio Shack. Worked wonders on my car...
