2 fans?

hey guys a quick question. i was wondering how to test if the first fan works? I kno that when my temp gauge hits 3/4 mark, the large fan turns on.

2nd...does cleaning ur radiator (straigthening fins and taking out stuck pebbles) help overheating problems?

my rad is riddled with pebbles - and never goes above the first line during regular driving.

an overheating issue might be caused by one of those pebbles causing a leak in your system - how's your rad fluid level?

I recently installed a new radiator in my 951 and noticed a perceptable difference in operating temperature. Might've been the new radiator, or the cooling system flush I did at the time, or the fact I'm now running pure H2O & water wetter. Or a combination.

Wow you really are having problems with your cooling system huh. When your car is off, try spinning your fan blades by hand to makes sure they spin freely. If one doesn't move or is very difficult to move, the motor is probably toast. As far as hitting the 97 degree mark, it seems to be very common on the early cars. The stock thermofan switch tells your fans to turn on at 92 degrees, and sometimes the engine can get a little hotter before this happens making it get close to the 97 degree mark. If you only have one fan working and you are in traffic, it will be much harder for your car to bring it back down below 87 (or 89 I cant remember) where your fans turn off. If you drive in traffic a lot and live in a warmer climate, you could consider putting in a low temp thermofan switch and thermostat. If your thermostat is bad as was mentioned in your last post, your car will not be able to cool down easily as your coolant will not be circulating at the proper temperature. If it opens up at too high of a temperature, your car will be operating at a higher temperature than it should. Are you still having the low temperature issue that you mentioned in your last thread?

yea like in the mornings, i drive directly to school not much stopping, if there is, its just a stop sign. the thermo never goes above the middle of the left box (very cold). even during warm days when im constantly moving, it usually never goes above the first box, but stop and go traffic jumps my thermo really fast, and my aux fan is constantly turning on.

how much are new thermo fan switches? thanks

I really dont think that is your problem. I would be on top of checking out my fans and that thermostat if I were you.

Make sure the system is bled properly also. warm up the car and crack the bleeder open just a little and make sure it's getting all liquid and no air out before you close it again.

The thermostat is a PITA to change. The snap ring is big and tough to work with. Use a 90 degree end snap-ring pliers to get it off and just have at it cause it's a stubborn thing!

When you replace it, go with a 160/180 degree unit. Lowest temprature one I found was at NAPA and it works great - temps stay below 1/2 on the hottest days!

just doing this you get air on the system ..

You must do that with the engine at normal temp running and with the proper bleed fitting ...

Nope, to bleed your system you must open the little bleeder screw located where the upper radiator hose connects to the cylinder head. Below is how the shop manual says to do it. Although for some reason i think the arrow they marked is pointing to the wrong one. If my memory serves me correctly, it is the one where I drew the yellow arrow to. You will figure it out once you get in there. Just don't over torque the bleeder screw when you close it up.
