my bad injector pics

the first 2 pics are of the same injector. The other is of a clean injector. 3 seem fine, but the other seems a bit gunky and leaky. Im going to send them off to have them cleaned and flow tested. This is probably the cause of my erratic idle, surging and hesitating, poor fuel economy, and exhaust smell. Hopefully $60 will do the trick. By the way, which injector would it be, that leaks? If you were to stand by the quarter panel passenger side and look from left to right..would it be 1-4. If so injector #2 is leaky. I know the firing order is 1-3-4-2.

From how I understand what you're saying, it would be injector #3. In our cars, the cylinders are numbered from front to back

Details are difficult to see due to poor focus.

sorry...my camera came free with some printer and its about the size of my palm. You get the gist of it though come on, dont be arrogant. Ill try more later. So you read injector numbers from the outside, in.

Injectors are numbered by the cylinder they feed. And in our cars the cylinders are numbered from front to back. I think you understood me correctly.
I've been there with bad digital camera's before.

You definately need to re-seal the injectors, because a fuel leak like that can be really hazardous, although I'm sure you already know that. As for your poor fuel economy and other related problems, this may or may not be the solution, however if your mileage is getting higher (maybe 60k+) they're due for a cleaning anyways.

What else have you done to try and pin down your running problems?

Here's what I did while I had the top half of my engine apart.

1) Get an old Tupperware box (enought to hold a quart or so), and drill 4 holes in the cover...the injectors should snap into the hole.

2) Snap injectors in, fill the container with a can of Seafoam injector cleaner, let it sit overnight.

3) Pop the injectors out. Run the injectors by hooking up a 9v battery and cycling cleaner through them. Backflush if needed if you have a vacuum pump like for bleeding brakes.

4) Reseal.

I've noticed my car seems to be a lot lighter on its feet now. When you dig into the throttle from 3500 up, it digs in and goes pretty nicely.

They won't be flow-matched, but for the price, it's worth a try first.

Ive done almost everything within my budget. New air filter. New oil filter (every 2k) . New fuel filter (when i replaced it was literally clogged w/ dirt and other gunk). New spark plugs. New transaxle fluid. Kept good tire pressure. Ran premium gas ( i now switched to regular). Put injector cleaner or gas cleaner in every once in awhile. Just put in a brand new 02 sensor.

When i first got the car last year before anything was done to it i believe it was getting 13mpg. I filled up last night and was getting 20mpg w/ regular unleaded ($2.49/gal!!!)

The guy i bought the car from also put in a real nice and expensive fuel pump, nice wires, etc.

Maybe i have a problem w/ my air flow mass meter. Maybe it needs some adjustment. Im not sure. That one injector just looks bad and i need to get them running properly. I know it may not fix my problems but its a good place to start...again.

Depending on how clogged your injectors are now, having them cleaned may yield a huge boost in mileage / peformance or a small one. Either way having them cleaned i think you will see some difference.

I need to have my injectors cleaned also, however i cant afford the week - two week down time involved. Ive been looking around for a used set of late injectors i can borrow or hopefully just purchase cheaply.

Turn around time is one day, but you need to take into account the amount of time the injectors are floating around in the postal system. It could be 2-4 days considering they are located in Washington, which is on the other end of the country from NY. Even more so from you being in Florida...thats literally on the other end of the country!

I suppose you could go for the expense of next-day airing it to and from, but that can be pretty damn expensiveat $50 each way! In that case im better off just buying new injectors practically.

They said they ship it back free..priority, so you just pay to ship it once. It comes out to like $60 plus shipping. I guess it could still take a couple days...damn. But new injectors are at least $100 each.

They will pay for regular priority mail shipping. If you want 2nd or next day air, you still pick up the tab.

Another nice thing about WitchHunter is the before/after comparison. Might tell you something. I couldn't resist FedEx both ways which doubled the total cost. But to pull them one weekend and get them back in the next...
