Timing question
On a late 944 when setting the timing and tension on the cam belt where is the timing line supposed to be at? Right on the housing mark or a tooth and a half or 10 degrees CCW? I am confused if this applies to the early or the late motor.
Reason is I retensioned and now have a horrible vibration in all rpm's. My BS marks are right on the money as is the cam belt. Am I to assume the BS marks are to be spot on but the cam mark is a bit retarded or not quite to the housing mark instead of spot on as the BS are? TIA! Dal

Everything should be lined up exactly. Don't know where you're getting this 10-degree stuff from. The only place the tooth-and-a-half thing comes into play is when you're setting the tension (you turn the engine that much CCW to evenly distribute the tension around the belt instead of having slack on one side and too much tension on the other). With the cam mark lined up, the BS marks should be lined up exactly.
Did you use the correct (O vs. X early or O vs. nothing) positioning of the indicators on the BS gears? I'll bet you have one of 'em 180 degrees out of position.

I am ok now. I had another go at it and see I was referencing off the paint scribe marks I have instead of the V notches. I think I read a scribe by a PO in error. It was a bit dark last time. Much better now and thanks!
But on another note the BB is whinning like a banshee and the tension is at 2.9 per 9201. New belt I know whines but this seems a bit too loud. Can I relax?

Your BB idler is probably touching the belt, IIRC, it should have .5 mm clearance.

The idler will cause it to whine!? You may have it. I know it hits it by about a thousandth or 2.

It can set up a vibration that sounds like a supercharger.

Exactly what it sounds like too! I went for a test drive and had a guy in a Honda look at me as if I were driving a Ferrari. Thanks
