Porsche Crest weird noise.

well basically there is a weird noise when i shift from 1st to second. As soon as i let the clutch out...depending on the RPM, it sounds like metal is contacting metal. Im hoping its not a huge problem....maybe low differential fluid? It doesnt happen in any other gear when i let the clutch out...just second. Let me know what you think.

hmm... is it a squeal?
and is it only momentary while you let the pedal out? or does it sound until you shift from second?

its more of like a thunk....like when im accelerating in first...no noise. When i put the clutch to the floor...no noise. When i move the shift to 2 position...no noise... when i let the clutch out there is no noise; until it is finally in gear... it basically makes the noise right when it catches 2nd. Like a metal contact thunk in the rear of the car....not too loud...and i can make it go away with varied throttle....but it is annoying. Once the car is in second and im accelerating through the gear there is nothing but crisp acceleration and when i shift into any other gear there is no noise. Im hoping that it is just low on diff fluid...because if i need a clutch ill kill something.

Can shifting from 1st to 2nd be a little difficult? My guess is a worn synchro ring on 2nd, a pretty common problem.

Try double clutching into 2nd, see if you still get the sound. If your not sure what that is...

-clutch in and move gearshift to neutral.
-release clutch
-engage clutch again and shift normally into 2nd

Doing this sorta bypasses the need for the synchro (as you synch the gear manually like that).

My 2nd gear synchro is very tempermental. Im assuming its taken a bit of abuse in the 60k miles that it was driven before i bought the car. I love my car to death, but would love it even more if it didnt have a bit of resistance when shifting from 1st to 2nd or grind if i shift to quickly. Whats strange is the higher i rev up in 1st, the easier it is to get into 2nd. Beats me...

my car does the same thing if you shift it even a little hard and mine needs a trans mount. You should check that first. hopefully this solves your problem

it is actually very smooth going into second. Sometimes when im revving it pretty high and i try to hit 2nd it is a little difficult but really its not too bad. It kinda sounds like the gears have no lubrication. I'm not driving it right now anyways so its not urgent, but have you ever heard of noise because of improper lubrication?

The box on my 944s2 cab was a little bit noisy when i had it so i had the oil changed for swepco and it was well worth it (although it was a bit expensive here in the uk) - it really quietened it down.
I did used to have problems in second just before i had my clutch changed. If i decellerated and changed to second i would get a loud "metally" knocking sounding along with a judder - but only in second - the car was at about 95k so i'de planned to change the clutch anyway but the mechanic who did the work confirmed it was starting to go.
No problems since the new one was fitted though.
