know what i need - now, how to save money?
Hey guys, thanks so much for your help in determining what I need for my rear stub axle / bearing job....
if you dont know what i'm talking about, the addresses can be found here: I found the bird in the rear! part number ok.. so I am in need of the inner/outer bearings, rear drivers stub axle, spacer tube.. etc etc etc... I know a lot of these parts can be found from old VW's and such.... which parts can be found cheaply, and which should I get from pelican?

actually it's not too bad.. the prices here at pelican are reasonable for all of the bearings and seals...
I dont *need* new spacers, and seeing as how they're the most expensive of the lot - I'll just leave them out.

Did a pretty similar job on a friend's 944, good luck.
In his case, he got burned BAD on the stub axle and hub. If the stub axle's splines are beat up, check the set they mate with (on the hub), they may have suffered damage as well. Might as well check it before you order anything, so you can save on shipping. I don't know if you know this already, but for the stub axle and possibly hub, call up a porsche recycler, they aren't too expensive. If they are, somebody here can set you up for less I'm sure. For the bearings, check paragon, zims, pelican, 944online, and local places, shop around ![]() You say you're leaving out the spacers... do you mean from the order, or from the rear hubs?... they are essential for correct operation.

lol i know the spacers are essential... they'll be there - i'm just going to use the ones that are on the car now... i dont think they suffered too much. I just mean i'm not going to bother buying new ones.
and from pelican, all bearings, seals, o-rings, etc.. came to about 50 bucks - I'm happy with that... the tube spacer alone was more than half the value of everything else combined! I've checked the part on the hub that you describe - both are torn up pretty badly... that's why i'm askin' around here for them... i'm hoping someone will help me get my baby back on the road....

I'm in canada, and should have both of the parts you're looking for, also removed from an 83. I have no idea what people on here are asking for parts, but I should be able to match their prices and ship greyhound, so there's no brokerage. Might not be a bad idea?...
As long as you are running with a spacer... I thought that's what you meant, but the other possibility crossed my mind, and I had to ask to be sure. I remember doing rear wheel bearings on an early car, man it was a lot of hammering, lol. If you are replacing the hub, you need to get the spacer that came with that hub, or so I am told. Another thought, I'll check the set I have, but I remember being told that it had recently had the wheel bearings done.... I don't want to say that for sure without checking, but it might save you some trouble. (Unless you were planning to do both sides as preventative maintenance, which is always a good idea).

I'd really appreciate that zero - i've had no offers as of late for people with these two parts.
i've got a couple ideas yet as far as install... I might just get a shop to do the work for me, and seeing as how I'm very low on funds I will probably get them to do one side only at this point... my other option is to go to my old highschool and ask to borrow their garage and hoist for an afternoon and get a friend to help with the install... if this is the case then I'll do both sides.. whatever happens it's got to be fairly local because it's not really drivable on major streets in it's current condition... could you (or anyone else for that matter) confirm for me that i would need the spacer that went with the hub? and could you clarify what you meant by your "another thought"? do you mean you have a set of bearings? or....?

lol I posted the "save money" thread stupidly assuming it'd cost me a bunch, but after I looked I'm happy with the prices.... except for the price of a new stub axle - almost 600 bones! *jaw drops*

I was thinking, and did you price out a replacement axle nut?...
I have heard a lot of mixed opinions on whether they are one-time-use or not, so I thought I would throw it out there. I'll check to see how complete everything is, I'm going to try to make it by today. It's been a little while since I have even been to that garage (I have one for storage/parts).

Warning! If the stub axle is .005" or more under where the outer bearing race rides don't buy it. You will have bearing problems within a year. You should not have any "wobble" in the bearing race when it's located inplace on the shaft.
The nut on the early shaft has notches for a cotter pin/key. The later model rear axles (aluminum sway arms) is a one use self locking nut. No cotter key. Generally you can reuse the early "castle" nuts. Get new cotter pins. Torque to 300 ft lb's.

socal, i dont quite follow what you mean when you say this:
"Warning! If the stub axle is .005" or more under where the outer bearing race rides don't buy it." do you mean the diameter of the stub axle where the outer bearing race rides? how would i tell that before buying?

Take an inner bearing race with you. Slip in over the axle to the area the race rides on and rock it sideways. Usually the race area is polished or peened so it's shiny.
Bet when you get the messed up stub axle out the inner race is broken into pieces.
