New here, but not new to some of you...

Hiya!

Some people will know me from some of the other forums out there, but I have decided that, in my never-ending quest to piss away time on the internet, I'd start posting here as well. :)

I've been a long-time car fanatic, and learned how to drive/took my driver's test in a '74 911. So, yes, Porsches are in my blood. My first car was an '82 VW Scirocco that was heavily mod'd for autocrossing, and a few weekends at Summit Point. I then bought an '85 Jetta from my father to be a daily driver because the Scirocco was too... rough. :p I then bought my '87 944 and reluctantly sold the Scirocco. The Jetta was eventually modified somewhat and donated to make room for a '90 Miata, which is the current daily driver. :)

The cars can be seen here: http://www.rideroom.com/ride.php?room=29

Otherwise, to make a living, I'm actually nearing the end of a career change. I had been an environmental consultant as the result of an Environmental Science BS from Virginia Tech. However, I decided I hated corporate America and am working my way into teaching. Currently, I'm an instructional assistant teaching mentally retarded children in a middle school and plan on teaching for real next fall. I love what I'm doing right now, but I have to be honest, I need a real income... (I make more money off renting rooms in my house than from my job!)

Anyway, I hope to waste plenty of time with you guys!

Later,
BB.

BB,

Good to see you on this board as well.

I'm back!

Ok, I got caught up in some other things and never seemed to make my way back here. Not sure why, but now that's about to change. After all, I'll have a whole summer to kill and forums are a great way to do it! ;)

Anyway, I've been making some progress with the car. I had originally wanted to buy another 944 to make a track flogger out of, but things like graduate school and my upcoming nuptuals are making me think that I'll only be able to make sporadic trips out there and that just doesn't justify the cost of another car. Therefore, I'll just play with my current one.

I've done some tinkering with the car, some performance, some cosmetic. I installed a Redline rollbar, Dino steering wheels and some 951 rocker extensions. I also put on some powder coated calipers because we know that'll make me faster. I really riced out my car by making a subtle front lip for it.

Ironically enough, the decision to track this car may have saved me a lot of money. I decided to get the rod bearings done as a precaution, and it turns out one of them was about to go! :(

So now I have a car that's all ready to go, a used set of R-compounds on some phone dials and the desire to get going. :)

Hey BB!!!! nice to see you over here! would you mind shooting me a PM about the front lip you made for the 944... it's been awhile since i was on that ... other... forum, but that looks sweet!

welcome!
Mike

Thanks! And it's good to be back! :)

To be honest, the lip is... heh... garden edging. I cut a strip that was 1 1/8" deep and installed it by using the good automotive double sided tape (not the foam stuff). I just cleaned everything up, put the tape on the lip, ran it from the center to each wheel well and trimmed it to fit. I have also added little metal tabs on the underside to help hold it in place. (See pic, more tabs have been added since then, along with using better tape.) Total cost was, maybe, $35, including beer.

It's kind of a prototype right now, but so far it's holding up very well. It has survived 80 mph runs after sitting in the 90* sun for several hours, so I'm reasonably confident that it may last. But it's only been about a month, so I can't say for certain. If it falls off, I'll see if I can find just where it failed and go from there.

In any event, I really only did it for cosmetic reasons so that the front would even out with the rocker extensions. I have no idea if it actually performs better.

looks pretty good, and sets off the front nicely... i doubt it performs better, but it certainly would do well to hide a bit of scratching on the lower lip. now you need a 951 rear valance :)

nice! are those metal tabs fastened or are they just taped to both surfaces?

BeerBurner 06-03-2007 11:27 AM

Right now they are just taped. I think the next step would be to screw them to the bottom of the lip. I don't mind putting holes there since they won't be visible should I remove the lip.

BeerBurner 06-03-2007 03:31 PM

You know, it took me the better part of a decade to finally get those tags!

i'm still partial to the OMFGWTF plate that circles around in emails from time to time.. hehe

BeerBurner 06-03-2007 05:11 PM

I knew a guy who had "WTF DUDE" on his plates. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't actually see it!
