Unorthodox but it worked
I just wanted to share with you all a pic I had on my phone from when I did my oil pan gasket last summer. It wasn't exactly like the tool Porsche mechanics use to hold an engine up but it worked well for me and I was able to change my gasket sucessfully. Cost me about $20. in the next post....

lol
given the material of the bar, and if it'd be strong enough (obviously it was because you did it), that's an ingenius method of holding up an engine!

Yea I have the same type of tool that I bought, But it has tree post, One bar that goes accros like in the pic and the other bar goes the other way and they bolt together. SOOOOO much nicer then using a engine puller to hold the engine up. Just Make sure its SAFE, I had a friend die like 5 years ago cus he THOUGHT he had his boat jacked up good. Remember check and triple check everything and have fail safes for fail safes. I always throw 2 jack stands under the car just to make sure I wont get crushed.

Just like factory tool...but theirs doesn't make use of non-strategic material!

Well, before I climbed under it, I checked it about 16 times and made sure that if anything started to shift and fall, I wasn't in the way. AT first I was scared but it was actually very sturdy, the weight of the engine held the ends in place.

I used a chain to tie my engine to the rafters, and let it sag ~ 3 inches. This way I could bolt the cross-member back on to it, then jack up the crossmember/engine assembly. It made it really easy. On a friend's car, I used a hand-winch and a nylon strap to hold his engine up. We talked about building a similar rig, but it was really nice to be able to adjust the height of the engine.
Neat idea though. Perhaps some stabilization is required, just incase the 2x4's try to walk out...

That would scare the ***** out of me. I worry even when I put my car up on jack stands.

I did the same as wizkid918 but used adjustable straps (pressure treated 2 x 4's)
