Just found it. it's actually right near the cruise control module.

Not sure which side I shoudl check so I did both. The side with the male #3 plug (i think this is the ballast side) has no power. The reading on the female #3 vascilates but seemed to even out at about 9.4. It dropped down to zero a few times.

I don't know if this helps but read a previous post which mentions water damage. My battery tray does have holes and the floor of the passenger side has been wet lately. Especially the last few days before it stopped running as there hage been really bad rain storms. If i recall I haven't driven the car since the bad rains. When I loosened the ground it started for a second and then never ran again.

SoCal Driver 02-25-2006 05:42 PM

The passenger foot well is where the DME is. Any water into that area and it can swamp and ruin the DME. I suggest taking cover off of the area and checking everything out for water damage and corrosion. Take the cover off of the DME and check inside.

Jeeper31 02-25-2006 06:44 PM

I pulled and opened the DME. AS far as I can tell it seems ok. Don't really know what I am looking for though. Here is a pic of each side. I also didn't see any corrosion under the dash where the DME was. If I fried something trying to start car with the ground loose would it be visible?

Fixed fuel rail, changed Fuel pressure regular, fuel pressure damper, cleaned and reinstalled fuel injectors and still didn't start. Checked fuel pressure and it is 52 psi (ok for 16v engine). Pressure after 30 min is 46 psi. I have power to the injector wires on one side, nothing on the other side. I used a noid light and get no light on the injuector wires when the ingine is cranked. The balast resistors are getting power. I have spark, the fuses are ok and there is power going to the ignition pack by the front drives light. I am gettig really frustrated now. Help please.

SoCal Driver 02-28-2006 08:29 PM

Have you set and connected the two anti knock sensors and the hall sensor on the cam gear? Unconnected these will change the spark timing. I don't think they will stop the injectors.

What shape is the AFS in? Is it plugged in? The AFS input does influence the injectors. As does the engine temp sender and the air temp sensor in the AFS.

Not only should each trace (lines between the solder joints) be check for burning. But the solder joints themselves need to be inspected. Especially at the plug connector. Also the back of the DME cable connector. Not unknown to have the wires break off of the back of the pins.

This is the gritty part of diagnosing electrical problems.

Jeeper31 02-28-2006 08:39 PM

what if a part is burned ? Would i need a new DME?

A small gauge insulated wire jumper will repair it. Solid core copper with a tin coating. Has to be insulated. Most extensive electronics stores will carry it. Look around for a PC board repair shop. Usually in the yellow pages.

Solder joints can just be reflowed -- resoldered.

The 'S' DME is notorious for burning through the ground to ground trace at the plug connection when the engine is started without the grounds being on the engine to the chassis.

Start looking at the ground and injector connections.

SoCal, If I ever have this problem....your butt is gonna be on a plane to Houston. :)

SoCal Driver 03-01-2006 08:37 AM

What? Just send me gas money and I'll drive my 944! Gota love it!

Jeeper31 03-01-2006 10:44 AM

How confident are you that it is my DME? I am thinking about just getting a new one. What ya think?

Razorback1980 03-01-2006 10:59 AM

Dan, I have no idea what a new one costs, but here are some dismantlers that have them if you decide that is what you want to do. I looked at 16Valve. Let me know if that is wrong.

SoCal, careful what you sign yourself up for!

SoCal Driver 03-01-2006 03:41 PM

If it's the electronics of the DME then it would be the driver circuits for the injectors. If you can borrow a DME from the same year and model car and it works then you have the answer. More likely you will have to buy a used one to try as 'S's are few and far between.

I would check out the injector circuit back to the DME plug. The power line for the injectors splits off at the DME relay. Could be a bad wire connection in the plug. If it is then it's a lot cheaper than buying a used DME that will not fix it.

Jeeper31 03-01-2006 06:57 PM

I am buying a used working DME tomorrow and praying that it works. If not I think i can return it. Keep your fingers crossed.

SoCal Driver 03-01-2006 07:51 PM

Has to be the same model and year.

yep checked into it. for my year ('87) either 944.618.124.00 or 944.168.124.01 will work. I hear the '88 dan only use the 944.618.124.01.

Jeeper31 03-02-2006 02:16 PM

Got tired of all the troubleshooting. I took a chance and picked up a used DME from my local mechanic and plugged it in and it worked. Car fired right up. Such a good feeling after not hearing it for so long.

Thanks to everone for all your help. It is comforting to know that you can come to a place like this ad find some many people willing to help.

Thanks again

Make sure the grounds from the engine to the chassis are there and tight. Find a rebuilder for your original DME and get it repaired. Make sure the rebuilder tells you what they find wrong.

Where would i find a rebuilder? Any idea the scost of doing that?

Jeff Laurence 03-03-2006 12:13 PM

Dan,
Glad to hear you got your car running!!!! My '87 944S quit after a rainstorm--leaky battery tray. After I dissassembled the DME and dried it, it was fine. I think I'm going to mount it under the glove box, so if any water does leak past the battery tray, it will have to travel *uphill *
to reach the DME. Won't be *concourse*, but might get you home with no problems.
Cheers,
Jeff
