timing belt at 4 years 30k?

I am looking at a car that last had the balance and timing belts done 4 years ago and 30K miles ago.

How long is this good for or should I have it done immediately?

YES!!! You're due for new belts.... I think it's about two yrs or 30K

The life spam of your belts is limited. Maximum life is close for you. They should be changed at 3 years or 40,000 mi.
I would change them right away. And you may need to do the water pump and rollers, if you don't know how long it has been. Now that your in there it's also a good time to do a ft. end reseal.

From what I gather here, most believe 2 years or 30 to 35K is the right interval.

My belts were just changed and I think they were about 7-10 years old(according the maintenance book). I got it done just in time though!...Was about to snap.

I'm the winner on the longest belt life...
The 86 I bought had original timing and balance shaft belts.
I bought it in 04, with 217,000km on it.
I'm absolutely serious, they were original. They were pretty much thread with some seriously ground down teeth attached.

That said, I obey 4 years/45,000 miles as a change interval. To each their own, but I am confident enough that they will last that long

As far as my 45k mile comment, what is the manual-reccomended interval?

Hey Zero - Canadian belts last longer. They spend half their lives frozen! Works for steaks, bacon, fish, vegetables...

It's the freezer burn you gotta watch out for.

Mine was changed at 4 years and 15000km. still looked new.
but hai it and the rollers replaced anyhow. (water pump replaced at
previous belt change).

after 15000km, it still would look new... somewhat...
but over time the rubber will actually weaken... something the eye cannot see.

May sound daft but If the '44 weren't an interference engine would owners change them as regularly?
My old 924 when i bought her had approx 90k on the clock (although it had stopped at 86k so this could be conservative).As soon as i bought it she had a full service in the garage which included the timing and alternator belt and the timing roller.Apparently they'de never been done before (it was lucky to have had an oil change!).
So 30k for a belt doesn't seem much really - are they purposely designed with such a short life to keep you going back to the specialists or is it because we worry about what could happen if we don't change them?
Many other vehicles go for miles and miles without belt changes and it's usually alternator belts that get done when they start squealing.
What's everyone's thoughts.
Mine are due to be checked this summer tho'.

My feeling is that since the 944 engine is a derivative of the 928, the rather inelegant timing belt setup came from trying to adapt it to an entry level Porsche. The 928's have a much better system
The '87+ spring tensioner helps (which required an additional boss on the block to be added), as does the later water pump with the belt guard to keep the teethed surfaces of the timing belt from directly contacting each other....but neither do much for the service interval of the belt(s) themselves.
