how do you tell which hatch strut you need, mine is in the driver side.....is that the left side strut or is it the right if you are looking at the engine from the front?

Left and right is ALWAYS determined by sitting in the driver's (or the passenger's) seat and looking forwards. Therefore USA cars are Left Hand Drive, UK cars are Right Hand Drive. It can sometimes be confusing when working on and looking at the engine. All the manufacturers use the same concept. Porsche (as do others) have different ways of identifying left and right parts.
