oil in air filter housing
doing some routine maintenance i opened my air filter housing to change the filter and found about an ounce or so of engine oil in the corner of the housing, where could that be from and why, anybody know?

Pull the j-boot also and look for heavy oil deposits on the throttle body and inside the j-boot. My car had a ton of oil in these parts and i was burning a huge amount through the exhaust. Two o-rings on the air oil seperator (basically the plastic oil filler tube) dry out and for some reason allow oil to get sucked into the intake through one of the vaccum lines hooked up.
I changed the o-rings and no more oil in the intake and very little burning oil..i went down from about .25 quarts every 300-ish miles to very little oil drop after two tanks.

The air oil seperator is basically the oil fill tube. It connects into the block at two points, the o-rings are on each part that goes in. Its a pain in the ass to get the filler tube off though..requires removal of the intake manifold.

In my limited experience with this, some oil is to be expected due to age, butt..........Techno Duck is right on, as far as I've seen and done. Vacumn leakage problems. Oil seperator mount O-rings and/or more. Sounds like some maintenance projects are in order.

If you decide to tackle the o-rings, its alot to take off but very straight foward. Remove intake box, AFM, J-boot..etc. Fuel rail, then pull the intake manifold. Some good things to do while you have alll of this apart are all the vacuum hoses connected to the ISV, change the ISV itself, change the DME temp sensor, clean / reseal the fuel injectors and change the heater control valve.
The cost of parts adds up quickly, but all of these things will make your car run infinitley better and even if they dont really need to be changed, depending on mileage should be addressed soon.

ok, probably stuff i should do, i'm at 100, 000 mis. and i get a little hesitation under heavy acceleration, sorta like a it's missing only not as bad. I'll make a list from your post and add it to the things i'm already doing, so far; engine mounts, tansaxle fluid, cooling temp switch, dist. cap & rotor, adjust em. brake, hood struts, power steering belt, new radiator (exp. tank) cap, clutch slave cylinder, new timing belts and rollers. So i'm gradually getting to everything i can, right now the most pressing thing is rear rotors and pads

In my opinion if your going through the trouble to remove the intake manifold, why clean the ISV when you can just replace the thing? Some have sucess with shooting carb-cleaner in, some dont. Not worth doing a pain in the butt job twice.
