Difference between Engines: Auto Trans vs. 5 spd????
 

Until I get a chance to fully take apart my pan, I was doing some online shopping for new engines....


Some local guy was selling an 87 engine on eBay (I lost) which he claimed was from a 5spd and wouldn't bolt up to his auto trans car. I can't imagine these are any different.

Anyone know?

I have read elsewhere, it's wise to get an automatic trans car's engine because they might not have been beat on as hard as a 5spd.

Aside from the flywheel, they should be identical.

The engine part is the same. If that was the reason he gave, it's probably good you didn't get it as that wasn't the truth and there may have been something wrong with the engine. It's probably best to fix the engine you have if you have the mechanical ability to do so. If you do not, then it may be cheaper to buy another engine. If you need help locating one, let me know.

There are some "accessory" differences, butt, nothing that would stop one from using an engine from an automatic to a manaul tranny car if they wanted to.

As far as the last paragraph of your question.......maybe, butt.........don't bet on it. I picked up an auto car, and it was beat as bad, if not MORE than a manual tranny car. Don't bet on it, in other words. Do the footwork, and diagnositic checks........always.

A person buying an automatic 944 is likely to be a lot more car lazy. A person bying a manual, is more likely to want to push the car. I'd prefer someone who drove their card hard, but took good care of what it needed, to someone who did't take care of the car.

I've seen a nice automatic 944 sell for $7,000. Not a common price at all...

On the other hand you really have to force (Full throttle) a Auto 944 to take off or perform at all...

Regular street or highway driving, its doubtful you'd even hit 5k rpm on an auto.

So I found an engine from another guy. It was an automatic trans car. Assuming I take the flywheel off my engine and the pressure plate, clutch, etc aside from flywheel and pressure plate bolts will I need? Can I just swap all this stuff over?

Sure.........

The funny thing is that you will probably have a brand spanking new pilot bearing in that auto engine.

Or...for a mere $515, I can just redo the clutch "while I'm in there" :rolleyes:
