Why did you.......

Random question... What was the reason for buying your 944?

Mine was because I started looking a cheap "fast" manual cars and I stumbled upon a 944 right by me that was the right price. I test drove it and I was hooked. Bought it a week later. Ever since then I can only drive 2 door german cars . Car ran mint until I was hit by a guy who ran a stop sign. Then I test drove a S2 and I was hooked again. That spun a bearing so I knew then I needed something reliable so I got a GTI which is almost as fun to drive. I miss the feel and smell of the 944 though.

I always like the look of them.Classic and cool looking '80's styling.
Cooler, what do you mean by "spun a bearing"?

I spun a rod bearing on the highway. Very odd because i wasnt at a high rpm and I was driving easy. I got it home and drained the oil and it had gold specks in it . That was a sad day.

The year is 1985.

Couldn't resist the sleeper Stone Grey 944 that had just arrived at the dealer.

Guards Red was all the rage- had to back order it and pay extra for the red....but I thought the grey looked more 'German' and I fell in love with the combo of dark grey exterior with the creamy colored interior.

The car has been nothing but a joy over the last 20 years...never once failed to start or broken down. Except for door-dings from idiots in parking lots, the paint still looks like it did the day it was purchased. ( mostly garaged or kept covered it's whole life ). Not a scuff mark or tear anywhere in the interior- these cars really will last when treated with care.

You couldn't get into a Ferrari for anything close to the price of the 944, and try owning a Ferrari for 20 years without having any major mechanical problems or have it start on cue every time.

The nice thing about the more 'humble' 944 is that it's not so in your face as is the 911 which screams 'boy-toy' or 'rich-guy' to many people.

And unilke the 911 the driving position is perfect, and you sit lower / more reclined than in the 911- more like you do in a Corvette or a Ferrari.

Yeah, it's a little slow off the line....but isn't it really all about the twisties anyway?

Hrm. I didn't know of the 944's existance until Need for Speed V, I grew up in the woods, and knew no one who liked Exotics like I did, so finding out about "Porsche's" was not easy. For all logical reasons, with how I grew up, I should be driving a truck. I still say Porsch most of the time.

That year, at a construction job my family was working at doing a lighting instalation, there was a black Porsche 944. Looked a little beat up, but I was realy excited to see it. I had no idea how much they cost at the time. The owner let me drive it in the parking lot, it had about 260,000 miles on it. I loved it, even with how slow I drove it.

Eventualy, with online forums and such, I was able to keep track of new and old cars. When came time to get a car, nothing quite had what the 944 did. I could carry all my Remote Control Racing gear. It was a sports car I knew I could fit in, I could afford one. (I'd started saving almost everything I earned after that first ride and drive, and by 17 had more then enough for one, was actualy looking at a 968).

The 968, I determiend was much too nice of a car for me to have as my own at that age. Especialy when you figure how rare they are. I kept looking, but never found anything quite the car for me.

Mom, wasn't very enthused about me buying a Porsche. So I delayed on the 944 until next year, when I started serious looking. She still didn't like the idea, so I tired to figure out why. Eventualy, I found it was chrash safety. She wanted me to get perhaps, a 5,000lb tank or something. I searched the internet for 944 wreck storeis, and always printed off each one I found. Whwat was the end result? She bought the car I was looking to buy... When next week, the S2 came along, I bought '85, she got the S2. My older brother, had put his SUV for sale due to insurance being too much, and the week after that, it found a buyer, and he picked up a 944 on that same day. Less than three weeks, a family with zero sports cars, to three Porsche's.

Here's a picture from just moments after the black '86 showed up.

Because I thought it was a great car when I graduated from school in the '80's and my opinion has never changed. But I wasn't able to afford one until the mid '90's. Having worked on most of the problems seem to be known for over the last 10 years. They seem to have a way of telling you to care for them, otherwise they do things like snap their timing belts and the sort.

My story...

Love the pic Tervuren!

Here's my story...
I was driving my 87 325 on the road one day coming back from a friends house and saw a gold 944 driving through traffic. Nice car! I thought. For some reason I've never noticed the car until then. It looked sporty and sleek and it was everything I've always liked in a car. The status symbol Porsche name is a plus too! I've always assumed that I could never afford a car like that so I made it my goal to one day own one... Some day I'll be able to afford a Porsche.

A couple days later I saw the red 944 on Sixteen Candles (haha) and fell in love with it. I started doing research online. Looking at how much a general 944 would cost. What are the differences in year etc. Downloading 944 pics and hording them on my computer. One day I looked on ebay for a general cost. Just for fun...(crazy in retrospect) I bid on a black 944 in California.. I placed a bid for $2500 as my max. I assumed that the car was going to go for 4k at least. I never thought I would win a straight body Porsche with 146k miles for 2500!! This is car I've dreamed about for the past couple of months.

As the week went on I watched the auction every chance I got. Since I work from home you can imagine how often that was. The final day I was refreshing the page like crazy. Nobody else was bidding! The clock ticked down until 0. It very slooowly sunk in that I had won. Wholy crap. Oh my god. Etc.

I immediately called my girlfriend and told her we were taking a trip to California.

My brother totaled my Grand Prix, so I bought some $800 POS and drove it for a year. The day of my High School graduation, I bought the 944 from my High School councellor and sold the POS to my brother . I'm the 3rd owner.

My old Honda was rusting in half and the 914 just wasn't going to cut it as an everyday vehicle so, on a lark, I priced the 924S and accidentally found one within 10 miles of my home. It was either buy another old Honda for the $3,000 or buy the 924S... I bought it without driving it and then promptly fell in love with it on the trip back to my house. It's been all downhill from there. Once I get the clutch in the 951 I'll be tearing around in that all summer. Great car, and just positively glued to the road.

I was dating a girl that wanted a Porsche 928 and she went and test drove one at the dealer and came over and told me about it and that she wanted one so bad. She made me go to the dealer and look at it although we both knew she couldn't afford any new car much less a Porsche but I went along. I seen the 928 and didn't really like it that much, then my head turned and looked at the new 944 (it was an 83 model). Instantly that was the car I had to have, but her and I were going to be married and she wanted a house so I chose not to buy it then. Three years later, I STILL was craving that car so bad that I went out and bought it brand new. Still one of the best days of my life. I kept the car until about a month or so ago. My daughter grew up with the car and her favorite thing about it was the way it sounds when you open the door (15 year old girl, what do you say?) but she also just really liked the car a lot and didn't want a typical Honda or Jetta like the other kids so we bought another one last November(87 auto) and are currently in the process of putting it as close to new as possible. When I get this one done, I'm going to buy another one for me and do the same...damn I miss that car. I wouldn't have sold mine, but he kept bugging me for a price so I set it really high knowing he would go away and quit bugging me, but he came back with the cash the next day. Won't ever make that mistake again.

Been looking for a first car for a while now..I always told myself I would own a trans-am..a nice, sleek, sexy trans-am..black, of course lol

Porsche? That name was a myth to me...a legend, even. I used to love picking up brochures at the dealership whenever I'd stop by to marvel at the new models on display (theres a dealership a few streets down lol...what else to do on a hot summer's day with your buddies?)

The closest I'd ever been to sitting in the seat of a Porsche was with an Xbox controller in my hand.

Home from work, one fateful day, my pops tells me about an ad posted in the caf by some guy selling a Porsche 944 for $3000.

944? Never heard of it..how could a Porsche go for so cheap?

So I googled the crap outta that name. I fell head over heels for that damn model lol. Maybe cuz it was so attainable, maybe cuz of its sleek and enticing curves..maybe a bit of both. Either way, I realized my dream of owning a genuine Porsche. As my first effing car, nonetheless!

Picked her up for $1100 cash. The number 2 connecting rod had let go, and the previous owner simply didnt have the time to devote to another Porsche project. (He has several restorations on his plate right now.)

At 19, you can damn well bet I was eager and willing to pour my heart, soul and money (gulp!) into her.

The reality of it all only hits me now and then when I peer over her in the garage, deciding what needs doing.

Man, I'm glad that trans-am never happened.
