Which is worse ( or better

Hi Everyone - This is my first post - I'm looking to get into a 944 and the ones I can afford either have bent valves or a bad ring and pinion/bad tranny. Which would you consider to be worse to work on?

Also - any 944s for sale cheap in the upper midwest?

Thanks

Bent valves is better in my opinion.

Look around the southern states, california in particular, lots of cheap ones down there.

Bad Tranny 2 - 300 for a used one and 2 - 3 hours to install. Really a DIY job

Thrown belt.

Head work or used head
Possible Piston damage
New Timing and Balance belts
5 - 7 hours labor
Or in other words $$$$$ when compared to the Tranny in time and money..
The upside is that the belts would then be done which is important maintenance...

Regards
Graham

Go with what you know. If you know how to work on engines better than you know how to change transmissions, then buy the bent valve one...if it's the other way around, buy one with a bad transmission. Of course it's like Graham said, then you'll have to change the belts. Of course if you don't have mechanic strengths, then you should consider another car.

I also think livewirevoodoo has a great point.

new (used) engines are cheap and transaxles are cheap. replacing the engine involves dropping the transaxle as well.

think about it

I would seriously consider that if your budget only allows purchase of a 944 with some sort of critical damage to it chances are you will be paying more than the cost of the car the first year on maintenance items/replacement parts alone.

worse= bent valves

it could have bent valves plus other problems found after repairing the valves, better to hear the motor run and know that you will be replacing the complete trans as stated above.
If you dont do your own work dont get either though, if you want to start doing your own work, go for it!
