Okay, my mom's Toyota Camary is in the shop for a couple of weeks, and for the past two weeks she has been using the 924S as a daily driver.
She does know how to drive stick, and pretty well. I went to drive it this past Friday night and the tranny is really krappy. When you put it in gear and let off the clutch it seems like it is being strained. Today my dad drove it and says something is wrong. He says that it "pops" into gear and it feels strained. He doesn't know if it's the clutch or what. Going to go drive it now, and will give more details in a couple hours. Any ideas? Please Help!!!

Just drove the 924S and noticed throughout every gear, when you let the clutch out I hear a clunk, like Eldorado,but in every gear. When letting off the gas, The car jerks backwards for a little(same type of jerk as if you are stalling it, but it doesn't stall). Just sounds really bad inside and out and boy do peaple ever look at you weird!

Sounds like you're hitting the "stops" that are designed to enable you to limp home when the clutch fails.

the rubber centre on the clutch flexes and rotates. This helps reduce shudder at low rpm. As Mlue said there are mechanical stops if the rubber over flexes/rotates. Tell you mom to stop doing burn outs, it sounds like you need a clutch.

How long can this go without being fixed?

As long as you can live with it, or you can fix it.
It just makes for crappy driving.

Eventually you will wear the nubs off and have no clutch...

I was told by a couple of local guys that those stops are rated similar to a spare tire. Once you get to the point of just running on the stops alone and no rubber left whatsoever, Porsche specifies a 35 mile drive home and no more. Again, that's just what a few reputible repair guys have said. Either way, it's f'd.

Jim Pasha article in Excellence;
"the rubber will start to shred, tear and break. the rubber from the driven disk will start to deposit itself around the inside of the bellhousing. this rubber has been known to knock the speed and reference sensors out , jam the pressure plate so its only partially effective and eventually cause other vibrations in the driveline. These vibrations should be taken seriously as they indicate more severe problems" |
