That spoon next to her would have been in my eye. I don't know if you are married but you never tell them something like that when there are sharp objects close by.

Steve

Very nice photos, your wife is lovely.

As for the v8 swap IMO looking at the other projects you have undertaken with this car I honestly feel you would have no problem if you go with the hybryds kit.

Another thought would be to use an LT1 instead. these engines are getting fairly inexpensive with many aftermarket part (for further tinkering :) ) and look very nice under the hood and the are also very reliable.

Anaxagoras1986 10-04-2006 11:22 AM

LTs are nice but I'd go with an LS if you have the money.

Schumi 10-04-2006 11:24 AM

Speaking of engine swaps, GM is recruting from UMR right now and I got up close and personal with their Hot Rod Magazine project, the Hot Rod Solstice. Nearly entire carbon fiber body with a 7 litre LS7 under the hood. Loud enough to make a nice ringing in your ears after it was turned off (no cat, no mufflers). suprisingly the LS7 fit unde the hood rather nicely, in fact I saw a Saturn Sky turbo they had there that seemed to have LESS room under the hood than this thing.

I agree LS is absolutlely an underrrated beast. I have built Nitro coupe engines and the block used (KB olds) is very similiar in regards to the side main bolts. I was only speaking to $$ and possible to be reasonable in regards to transaxle durability.

Yeah, I've only been married 4 years, so I don't have as much practice as you. I've learned already to close autotrader.com quickly when my wife comes in the room!

Anaxagoras1986 10-04-2006 12:33 PM

Cross bolted mains are a gift from god! haha

I'd love to do an LS hybrid on my 944 for a few reasons but most noteably- for Reliability, HP and TORQUE. An LS engine really doesn't weigh that much more than a 951 powerplant when you consider the turbo, manifolds, intercoolers, etc. Plus the LS engine can put out far more power and be more streetable and reliable while doing it. It's also something different. LT would be a lot of fun too but the iron block does offset the weight a bit. I would still be happy with an LT4 in my 944 though and I already have the 951 transaxle for it! :)

I too have learned to close Autotrader quickly. It's horrible being a guy. Frirst you have to hide the Playboys from your parents then the Autotraders from your spouse, it's not fair.

You guys are getting me worked up. An LS1 is not that expensive, relatively speaking. I just saw one on EBAY w/ ECU, A/C compressor, etc... for $2500. 100K miles but it could be gone through fairly cheaply. The Renegade stuff would run another $6K by the time I got exhaust, cooling, most of the goodies. I would imagine another couple grand in "unforseen" expenses, beer, food, that sort of thing. I would think that for 12-13K it could be done very cleanly. I could get at least 2K for my engine. Lets see $10K. I may have to do a bit of extra consulting work in the next couple months. If I do it I definately will go LS1. This just further makes me want to take a drive to Orlando and b..tch slap somebody for taking my money and my time.

If you do it just remember, you will no longer have a Porsche...

you will have a Porschev.

I couldn't bring myself to it, maybe I have just too much of the 'wine and cheese' in me or something....

shikzachaser 10-05-2006 08:41 AM

I am going to stay Porsche. I talked to the dyno shop today. $150 to make 3 passes and tune it. After that I am going to eat the bullet and go w/ a Speedforce kit.

Steve

understood
I've always thought if one has an ounce of purist in them swaps are not a good idea. Had to try though.. Ha

Are you doing the dyno runs for a baseline?

I don't know if you are aware of the adjustment on the DME for adding/pulling fuel and timing. Depending on the year you can go as much as 6% fuel and 4 degrees timing either way. I can't remember where it was I found it I think it was a link off of wilkes to a rennlist thread. It is a little opening on the side of the DME case and I use a 6 penny nail instead of the golf tee to use for adjustment. Don't forget another good way of tuning is using egt and A/F ratio and adjusting fuel pressure. I would highly recommend the EGT meter anyway for saftey regardless of engine, turbo nitrous, supercharger. You can save yourself a lot of $$ in the long run.

Anaxagoras1986 10-05-2006 10:55 AM

Yeah my 87 has the adjustable DME, it's right underneathe the passenger side carpet.

shikzachaser 10-05-2006 11:03 AM

I want to establish baseline for my own satisfaction. 1st pull before I did anything was right at 120 RWHP. I am curious to see how much I gained and how much I wasted with what has been done so far. I also am going to get it weighed. This stuff is purely for my own curiosity. The shop is no more than 10 minutes from me and the owner is a cool guy. He is sort of Mr Viper in this area but is humoring me and my little car. If I did not have this much in it already I would probably opt for the LS1 but as it is I should be able to complete it for another $5000 minus what I hopefully am able to recover. I talked to the Police here again today and they are going for it. I realize the blood from a turnip thing but legal pressure has a way of expediting things.

I am going to do a MAF conversion prior to the run also. At least I will be able to tune it a little better.

Steve

shikzachaser 10-05-2006 11:04 AM

I don't think there is a lot of adjustment if any on an 84. If there is let me know. Speedforce supplies a later model one just for that purpose w/ the kit I am looking at along w/ 951 injectors and an intercooler.

Steve

bleucamaro 10-05-2006 01:24 PM

What MAF conversion are you doing? I used a GM type MAP sensor w/ IAT and an SMT-7 piggyback. Its Very tunable, and runs pretty good for just being tuned while driving around. I'll have to get it on the dyno one of these days.

Razorback1980 10-05-2006 01:25 PM

Sounds fun Steve...maybe with all my new found time, I'll come help you! :)

blown 944 10-05-2006 02:03 PM

Steve there is an adjustment on that year I think it's the same as mine. Under the dash above the steering column on the side that your right leg would be on. You may have to pop off a round cover.

Blue camaro where did you come up with that kit. That is one of the questions that never got answer by the "vendor" being mentioned earlier. Using a MAF sensor would greatly help the drivability of my current setup.

That is one of the issues that I have had ...sometimes the supercharger would pull a little too much against the AFM...causing a high idle that I had to correct by revving it a little then letting it come down slowly. Generaly happened after a extended highway cruise.

Tom:

If you ever get up this way I would be honored to have you come by. It would be a lot of fun. I really just know enough about the cars to get in trouble but I definately know enough about this city to do things that would get a normal person in trouble (possibly prison) but have the contacts to avoid it.
Bring your daughter, there are an incredible amount of cool things to do here. The new city museum is over the top and the music scene here is fantastic. I have several friends that own blues or jazz clubs / resturants that are definately family friendly. The zoo is incredible and between my wife and son they manage 18 hotels so we could definately swing employee rates. It would be a great time. Southwest fares are cheap and I can loan you a Durango for a couple days.

I need to get the rest of my bits and pieces together and then I am going for it. I have thought about the V8 thing but it will be way less just to do a SC kit, especially if I get any kind of money back. Plus l just like the car. We are watching the grandbaby for 4 days while our son is in Toronto and I got a baby seat that fits so she and I have been running around since we got back from vegas. Every time we go to the garage she hugs the 944 and calls it "her porch". I can't take it's heart (motor) out for a transplant.

Thank goodness you have stopped all that Cheby implant talk.

Just like a nice set of tits..."ain't nothing like the real thing"

SFR should give you all the power you desire and make that car a blast to drive.

That and you still get the pride of owning a true sports car.

shikzachaser 10-05-2006 05:54 PM

Hey San Diego..........HOOZ!!..........UR!!.............DA DDY??

The Cards may have ended the season 4-26 on the road but they are 2-0 now when it matters.
