Very impressive for a homemade thing (please don't take any offense at the term, I just don't have another way to describe it). You have raised the bar. You ever taken that to a Porsche purist event just to see the reaction? It would be well worth it. You might want to take a small net or bucket as eyeballs will be popping out everywhere. Thanks!

About it being home made, it was originally built as a kit by Huntley Racing, and I bought it used, and was only really able to use the blower, manifold, tubing, and fuel rail. The rest had to be refurbished, or sourced new. If I had to grade the fabrication quality, I'd give it a B+ , but if I had to grade the engineering, I'd give it a C-. The manifold runners are much too short, The plenum volume is incorrect, there isn't a provision for aftercooling, and it uses an eaton, so theres lots of heat. If I was going from scratch, I'd use a Twin-Screw blower so you maintain the positive displacement, but gain the efficiency, I'd mount it lower by fabricating a new bracket for the alternator & AC to move them down and closer together. This would allow for a better plenum sizing, and also longer runners, as well as room for an intercooler.

My next plan is to add water injection, and to keep tuning.
I went on a run today and it was pinging a bit in spots, so it deffinately needs more tuning. I may try to find some dyno time where they won't rape my pocketbook too bad.

The best thing about the car is the look on peoples faces when they see under the hood.

shikzachaser 10-08-2006 03:33 AM

The controller is a tiny thing w/ 4 pots to adjust A/F in 4 different RPM ranges. I have it mounted in the glove box. It was easy enough as there is already a grommet through the firewall that has the stereo power wire to the battery in it. I have run the power over to the fuse box w/ a 3A fuse in line. I called Lindsey Friday and they are sending me the reducer for the MAF to go from 3 1/2" to the required 2 3/4". I also got a short piece of 2 3/4" aluminum tubing to clamp the throttle body boot and reducer to. I stuck a meter on my AFM wires and there are 11.5 volts, ground, 2 volts, and what I assume to be the temp wire. I will get a factory schematic and find out for sure. I have an early car and my DME is under the dash and I don't have the little cubby hole.

I did get out w/ it today. The weather here was perfect. There was a car show and chili cook-off over in Belleville, IL and I have never seen so many American cars on display. I got some great pis and may post a few. There must have been 15-20 big block Challengers alone. The only import I saw was one MG Midget. It looked kind of sad and out of place.

On mine I intend on eliminating the power steering and moving the A/C to the PS pump spot. My Brother-in-law is a partner in a large machine shop in Marissa, IL. He has agreeed to make whatever I need in terms of brackets, etc. They make one off parts for the steel industry and refurbish cranes and stuff so I/m sure they can handle what I need. The SC goes where the A/C used to reside. The kit looks very clean. I have to go with somebody that has done this before as I will really be upset if I go through another 7-8 month ordeal and lay out my cash for nothing. Tim @ Speedforce told me that on his 951 he just took off the PS pump, filled it w/ ATF, and capped it off. He changes the ATF once a year and has never had a problem. Definately sounds easier than replacing the rack. I am going to at least try that first. Between that, the new suspension, and the short shift it kind of seals the deal that my wife will never want to drive it. Good.

On a side note, the use of both a Schnell short shift @ the transmission and a Speedforce one @ the shifter along w/ a new bushing makes for an incredible feel. I love it. Very short, very precise. It feels even better than the 5 series BMW I had, and that was a bad a...s car. I had a bad clutch in it and went ahead and bought a Metric Mechanics close ratio 5-speed, a Sachs clutch kit, and got a 390 limited slip rear end out of a 525 automatic. I then also used a short shifter on it. The stock rear end was 323:1 and these changes made it a rocket out of the hole. It also had the Dinan stroker kit, headers, new head, etc. I did a full suspension and a baffeled oil pan also. That thing drove like a maxed out small block. I should have never sold that car. It had 385,000 on it when I sold it to the Dinan distributor here in St Louis. At the time we just had way too many cars and I had just picked up my 964.

That trailer is awesome.

I like the AMX and the Midget too.

shikzachaser 10-08-2006 07:00 AM

The Coupe and trailer were the coolest thing there. They talked to me a while and that set up has never been trailered. It is always driven to shows and also just to go places. It has been featured a few times in magazines and on TV. Here are a couple others:

Beucamaro

thanks for the input that is great looking setup. I saw it once for sale I think. If you ever decide to try to use an intercoler/aftercooler You can leave the blower where it is (maybe reclocked)and fab an intake I used the stock runners and built a box with a 2.5 in inlet. 6#s of boost is about right I bet, my stock pulley is 3.125 and the smaller one is 2.81. And I was able to get about 10psi on a cold day and 9 warmed with the stock one. I did see signifcant gains when I got the TB to open all the way (from 7 to 9psi). Initially I didn't think much of it, coming from a blown alky background just cracking the throttle allows enough air for the engine to breath but with such a small opening every little bit make a difference so if yours is at 85% I bet you will see some gains by getting full throttle.

My system is setup far more primitive but it does work. I am just not as familiar with tuning using electronics. I have so far used FP and the stock settings on the DME's FQS. What injectors are you running and can you read duty cycle? I have the 390cc's if you have the same I would be curious as to wht FP you are running and what the duty cycle is at full use?

After some thought I think you are onto something possibly better off using the MAP sensor route b/c a MAF may have to be recalibrated depending on the pulley used. The way you are setup you can make the adjustments via laptop and can remap the fuel curve. Although I will be following Steve's quest in regards to his MAF system. Thanks very much to both of you.

BTW Steve I see you took a pic of a Challenger. When I had a resto shop we did a 71 440 six pack shaker hood with R/T package. It was black on black with red R/T stripes and very rare it was equiped with a Dana 60 with an Auto trans (most came with 8 3/4)

Steve Idid the PS block and other than being harder to ser I have had no problems.

bleucamaro 10-09-2006 02:46 PM

Sid,

The injectors are 55lb Siemens (I think the P/N is 3208???), and the FPR is stock 944S2 (2.5bar or 3.0 bar, can't remember). I haven't done any tests on the duty cycle, but it can go so rich at higher RPMs that it stalls the motor (chuggle).

blown 944 10-10-2006 08:25 AM

Thanks,

It's kinda funny here in this forum we have possibly three different ways to control the fuel

Mine primitive FP and uses factory components (mechanical very low budget)

Bleucamaro uses latest technology in conjunction with factory parts (hi tech researcher)

Steve using (in the future) factory type components (MAF) using mechanically adjustable addons
Everyone seems to be happy so far.
Everyone may be able to learn something from the others as well.
Got to love the internets :)

Hopefully mine won't be in the too distant future. I spoke to the guys @ Lindsey and they are getting me the adaptor hose I need to go from the Ford AFM to the inake boot. Go try to find a 3 1/2" to 2 3/4" rubber adaptor @ Home Depot sometime, it ain't happening. I talked to the guys @ PMAS and they will recalibrate the AFM for $100 when I get the SC in. I just have to wait and see what happens on my refund from the other one. I have been told several storis, none of which have come to fruition.

Is it worth it to also go w/ a different ignition? MSD or something? Just curious what the advantages would be.

Yeah this internet thing is amazing. I started the project w/ absolutely no idea of what I was getting into. It is a learning experience for sure. I have had a lot of good advice and help. I was not raised around car people. My dad and brother felt they were simply transportation. My brother still does and he is pulling big dollars as a patent attorney. He is threatning to go out and buy a Subaru Outback as it is sportier than his current Accord. Oh well, to each his / her own.I would tell him he's a total dork except that he is also a 3rd degree black belt in Karate and teaches Israeli street fighting. He is a bad ass for a little guy. I spent my spare time playing bass instead of wrenching or fighting. I am getting a late start with the cars.

I really like the little 944 a lot. Now that it is so stiff my wife won't drive it anymore, GOOD. I will probably put it back on jack stands here in the next week or so. The weather is supposed to turn bad and I really like working in a heated garage. I will be doing a radiant heat floor next summer to really make it nice for next year. When I built the garage I did three pours instead of monolythic. I have 12" high concrete side walls that the building is on. I intend on running two sets of polyethelyne pipe close together then doing another 4" pour on top. These pipes will go to two 50 gallon water heaters w/ a 50 / 50 mix of water and anti-freeze. I will then use a couple pumps to circulate it around. Should make for a cozy work area. This year I will just have to stick w/ gas heat. The Wardon got all my disposable cash and time as I just built her a killer hot tub , infrared sauna, first floor laundry room for her birthday. The infrared sauna is great for her fibro-myalgia. I am seriously thinking of also getting a fiberglass lap pool for water aerobics and for our Granddaughter to play in.

Thanks for the input guys. This post has really gone all over the place. I love it. By the way, I have some misc parts that I will pretty much let go for shipping and a few bucks extra for packing time and materials:

Front and rear stock bumpers
Front and rear sway bars
Fuel rail
Stock air cleaner box
AFM as soon as I get my stuff installed and running
Lot of misc little stuff

PM me for anymore info

Razorback1980 10-10-2006 07:49 PM

Y'all are too funny. Steve, I know what you mean about needing a heated garage. We are suppose to be getting some really cold weather also. I think it's suppose to get down to 82 or 83 this week. Time to dig out the sweaters! :) I think we are starting to enter into our summer-lite season.

shikzachaser 10-11-2006 03:11 AM

Tom:

It never was those East Texas winter days that bothered me, it was those lovely August afternoons. I actually did see snow once while I lived there. As I remember 2 inches that melted off by afternoon paralyzed the area.

Steve

Razorback1980 10-11-2006 06:51 AM

I totally agree with you there. I put off a lot of work that I should have had done back in August waiting for the cooler weather. The heat didn't used to bother me too much but now that I am older and heavier :) it's harder to work out there. I know what everyone is thinking...Tom, you are just a little out of shape...to that I say, hey, round is a shape. I have an attached garage and when I did work on my car, I would open up the garage door and put a fan inside the house and blow the a/c into the garage. Never did get real comfortable though. I plan on putting a window a/c unit in my garage before next year.

I have been in Houston for 23 years now and I did finally see a snow on Christmas eve 2004. The snow actually accumulated about 12 inches if you can believe that, but by 10:00 am on Christmas day, it was all gone. You can imagine what our freeways were like on Christmas eve...these people don't know how to drive well on good roads...then throw some snow and driving home from a Christmas party into the equation....you get a demolition derby. Some of it was actually pretty fun to watch. I remember driving home from my uncle's house and I was crusing along about 30 or so and I was passed by a Mustang and a four wheel drive truck going about 70 honking and flashing their lights. About two miles down the road, they crossed a bridge and at the other side, they were both there...the pickup was upside down and the Mustang was smashed into a concrete wall. They were all standing outside their cars by the time I drove by so I just honked and waved as I drove by. I thought about stopping and saying..."Here's your sign". Speaking of signs, I just have to post a picture I took with my cell phone the other day. I'll look that up and do it later.

Where you live a heated garage would be a must have.

Eldorado 10-11-2006 07:28 AM

i'd die to have a heated garage..
hell, i'd die to have an EMPTY garage.. still living at the 'rents place, where my father (who has been working for 35 years) thinks every piece of paper he's ever got, whether it's for my mom's business or his place of employment, must be saved...

me - "lets burn it all!"
dad - "no no! there's important documents in there!"
me (blowing dust off of a box to read the writing) - "tax: 1979?"
dad - "you never know..."

blown 944 10-11-2006 08:55 AM

Heated garage now that would be nice. I use a kerosene type in a 3 car and it takes a little while to heat, but not too bad, it is insulated fairly well. i am just waiting for the "deal" at one of the auctions I frequent fro a ceiling mount nat gas type.

My story is I've been messing with cars since I was 14. My grandfather had a garage simliar to Eldorado's story but I was just young and dumb enough to go ahead and trash a lot of stuff, as well as, find very creative ways of storing things (overhead rafters).

I bought, built and sold cars mostly GM muscle car stuff all through high school and afterward (never had a real job untill I was mid 20's).

Took the racing street and drag at the track to the highest eschelon I felt comfortable with. Peaked with my Nova and helping wrench on friend Nitro Coupe (if anyone follows Super Chevy it is the 41 Willys/Chevy, They even made a limited run of HOT WHEELS of it).

Now my main obsession is my kids bike racing and other sports,. The cars _Porsches_ are a very small part of my metal workload :). But with winter coming on and the race seaon ending soon I will be back hard at it.

Couple of pics of my latest obsession

Now if I had somone taking shots of my cars I could post those too :)

shikzachaser 10-11-2006 09:00 AM

Yeah, I'm pretty anal about neatness. I just went through the garage attic today w/ one of my employees and threw out a ton of stuff, all of it useless unless you ask Mrs 944. Fortunately trash collection is today while she is at the office. Anybody need a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Beanbag Chair? This is the kind of treasure I am finding along with boxes from stuff we threw away 10 years ago. How about a set of wasted carpets from a 76 Fiat 124? An old Motorola car phone w/ the windshield antenna? No?? Well then how about 15 year old Christmas garland or old wasted trim pieces from a 76 BMW 320i?

Steve

shikzachaser 10-11-2006 09:03 AM

Awesome Bike pictures. Hopefully you have bought them cups if you want to see grandkids. If you could get pics of your cars doing those jumps you would really have something.
