My just be the DME relay. Take it out and clean the contacts. If not then someone took your reference sensors.

What CD key do you have? I have access to essentially all of the copies, but each disk has a different cd key needed.

IE the dell's and such require an OEM cd.

SoCal just does not like OT in this forum. Sorry but I am working on very limited time before I lose connection and OT will not load up and this forum barely did so I took what I could use.

I have the old XP and had to reformat and lost all SP2 updates so all I really need is the SP2 CD or the entire OP system that has the SP2.

I cannot do anything until I get the XP up to date.

IE7 has to have SP2 to download. And I am on dial up and the time to load is in days instead of hours.

Poz.....I have no clue. I do have an authenticity key if that is what you mean?

Thanks guys for the help and SoCal I am very sorry this miffed you. Next time I will call a geek!

Geezz Dude! Check your PM's.

An "auth code" is the numbers and letters that have to be entered when installing and reinstalling XP. Depending on the sequence of some of the characters you will get different types of installs; home, pro, retail, update, etc.

Problem with SP2 is that some of the these key sequences have to be changed a bit. Or you use a Pro Corporate number to by pass the online check. Most of those numbers have been pulled by MS so if you try to get the updates you get hammered even IF you own a ligit copy!

If you get hammered by MS with a legit CD key just call the windows activation department, it happens sometimes and it's no big deal to straighten out.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

If you want to order directly from microsoft, but the wait time seems a little scary
You could try asking at the neighbor's if they have high speed and burn one yourself?
It's 266mb, so on dialup it is just ridiculous to download, you are correct.

I work for microsoft in the windows XP department (soon to be the vista department) so I can usually answer windows related questions.

What kind of computer problems are you having? We can probably straighten this out pretty easily.

I know someone, lets call him Lyle, that can show you how to install using a corporate CD key, and then when finally loaded, Lyle can show you how to change your XP cd key with a hacked key that will enable you to download and install all updates, including service pack 2.

now, the best place to mount a computer would be in the rear spare tire well... either that, or mount butted up against the rear seats in a non-descript custom box.

I also know someone, let's call him Lyle, who knows of a CD key that can be used unlimited times and works for both XPH, XPP and XPMCE that will pass all windows updates and other verifications.......
A.K.A. an un-leaked VLK.
We don't talk about that stuff here though.

Why would the previous lyle ever need to change the CD key?..... If you had one that worked for windows updates then it would work for the install, you would not need the cd key changing utility. That part makes no sense to me.

Anyhoo, the problem here is that the OP is on dial-up and cannot download the hefty 266mb file. Hence the request for the CD.
Now, if you had a CD with SP2 slipstreamed into it then that might help, but you would have to do a clean install to take advantage of that. A repair install may do it, but it could break things badly.

Ah forget it, I have a golf game scheduled with him on tuesday, I'll just ask him then

Seriously though, if a CD key will pass the WGA test then it definately passes the built-in tester for installation.

I'll give you a hint as to what is going on; (I bet) the OS was installed using what is now a bogus serial. When this fails the test either the end user buys the OS and gets a valid serial or they go to the clandestine web sites were one can get the necessary files and serials to bypass the WGA -- for now. Interesting that there are only two bytes difference on the install CD between a Home version and the Pro version. You can use a Home serial and get the Pro install.

Kind of like having the sensors plugged in wrong. If you switch them you get a turbo and not an N/A. << Had to keep this "on topic".

well...

back when XP first came out, i bought the home version. then, promptly found that the home version didn't support multiple CPU's. i had a dual CPU machine at the time. so, i hacked the registry, and voile... dual cpu support on XP home. its the same damn product, i am sure, as XP pro, just a slightly different install configuration file, or something like that.

If there were only 2 bytes different between the home and pro CD's then I would be able to manually repair every file in a pro installation from a home CD, and I assure you that is not possible.
There are lots of files missing on the home cd when compared to the pro cd.

As for the differences between home and pro...... lots.
Domains, multi-cpu support, the MUI, backup manager, etc.

If you want 2 very similar OS's, then compare MCE and Pro
