clicking noise near glovebox!

sounds like a relay clicking erratically from near the glovebox, mostly at starup but also happens randomly while driving! anybody know what it might be? thanks

Me Too!

I have a late '86 944 (has some '87 parts) and it does the same thing. I can't even identify anything with moving parts on that area. Its not the fan. It does it more when I'm turning at low speed just after startup. I'm baffled.

I have the same thing and I always figured it was a relay turning on / off.

It's the vacuum switch for the heater control valve. If you remove the glovebox, you can see and feel it next to the torque tube tunnel. There are two of them - the upper one serves the flaps that direct air in the cabin and the lower one serves the heater control valve. I have had this issue on two cars and have not figured out the solution. I replaced the switch on my 968, but it still clicks if the cabin temp is near the thermostat setting. My next attempt will be to clean the ground point for the temperature controller. (GP-II?) There was someone else on this list who had the same problem a few weeks ago.

yeah

i was thinking a relay also, that is what it sounds like. i thought if it was the DME relay that it would affect the way the car runs, which it doesn't, i'll follw up on some of these leads and let you know if i find out what it is, thanks, all.

I have the same thing going on and my AC just started screwing up. It will blow cold air then start blowing hot air. I figure it must be the heater control vacuum switch. If I figure out a solution I'll post it. If anyone else discovers a fix please post it.
