Porsche Crest whining whistle. - mind of its own

I swear my 1984 944 n/a has a mind of its own. When it gets pissed off at me it talks to me. But there are no words. Its a whiny whistle when I change gears. Now I know the clutch has to be replaced. Just for obvious reasons such as the gears sticking sometimes. Anyways, I was gonna take on this project myself, but I just don't have the time plus I read some other forums that say its a joke to replace, because you might do something wrong - and then poof another problem. I think I'm gonna take it to the shop. I just don't want to pay 1700.00 for it to be replaced. So far knock on wood my car is 98% original from the original owner back in 84 with all maintenance records. Its only got 87k on it!!So if anyone knows a good reliable honest cheap mechanic that can cut me some sorta deal in southern california. Bring it on. Thanks for any suggestions or advice.

perhaps ask another pelican who has been through this ordeal to help you out with the replacement...
beer is a common form of supplemental payment.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

I'm located in San Diego. I have been to dieters which is a independant porsche shop. But they are the ones that gave me the quote for 1700.00. I have found other places in san diego county and have rec'd quotes for about the same. I don't mind traveling as long as its in so cal.
