924 engine(s)
Many years ago, I had a 1979 924. Under the hood was an engine that I believe was Audi, since it had the Audi "rings" in the casting. And I always thought that all 924 cars were just VolkswAudis with a Porsche badge.
But... Yesterday at an autox, a guy shows up with a 924 but under the hood is what appears to be a 944 engine. I asked him about it, and he said he didn't know anything about the car except that it was a Porsche. I know you people here will have answers for me. Was the 924 available with a 944 engine, or was I just looking at a swap-job?

The 1987-1988 924S was basically a 944 without the fender blisters.

Sort of Audi, sort of not. Yes, you were looking at a 924S, basically all 944 under the skin.
Then again, the only difference to cars like mine would be the 2.5L NA vs. the 2.0L NA or turbo that I have... The 2.0L engine referred to as "Audi" is of Audi source - the short block was basically the same as used in numerous Audis including the Audi 100 and a certain breadvan. ![]() The version in the 924 has a Porsche-designed head and oil pan, not to mention intake and exhaust. Helps it out a little, though it's still readily considered underpowered in the 2.0L NA form. Much more fun when you slap on the turbo - like most cars! ![]()

I think I'll try and catch up with the autox guy, since he seemed to also not know anything about his car, and point him in the direction of Pelican. Maybe turn him into an enthusiast instead of just an owner.

I have a 87' 924S. The S-es were produced for the 87-88 years. It's a 2.5 944 NA engine and drivetrain under the hood. I belive they are a 2nd revision engine, with the newer fuel rail that has the damper and regulator at opposite ends as opposoed to the early 944 engine with the damper and regulator both at the back of the fuel rail. All wiring/DMU is equivalent to a 1984 944. Chassis is also pretty much 944 except the body panels. Suspension is 944 also AFAIK. Pretty much everything. I don't know of one peice on the car that is a non porsche 944.x part number......
They are lighter weight than the 944 and becasue of this and the aerodynamics slightly quicker than the early 944s.

FYI most of the wiring is the same as the later 944's not the early ones. You can get a bit confused if you don't use the correct wiring diagrams when trouble shooting. Yes the instruments kind of use the early wiring however the car uses the later DME and engine idle valve, AFS.
Rear suspension uses the later aluminum training arms. Front uses the early steel and power steering.

Also the interiors are early 944/924.
And I believe that the A-arms are steel as opposed to the aluminum ones used in 944's...

Front A-arms are steel. Easier to replace the ball joint every twenty years or so.
Rear are aluminum and have the better bearing set than the early steel.
