sluggish, bad idle, oily air filter probs

Recently ive been having some problems with my 83' 944. I was fixing a couple back lights that were out at night and when i finished i couldnt turn my car on. The battery was dead. I charged it and it ran for a week. It died again, so i figured, allright time for a new one. I put in a new one and still had problems. It would start up but die immediately. It couldn't keep an idle of 900. Ive had a similar problem before and usually i'd just give it some gas to raise the idle. But when i gave it gas this time it immediatley died. I messed around with it for a bit, adjusted the idle pin, punched the car and got it working. Usually at start up it will idle aroun 300 and want to die until i give it gas. Once it warms up it's fine. Also, i checked my air filter...not only is it very very dirty, but i found a rather larger amount of oil in the air filter box. That cant be good. Once i get my next paycheck i'm going to get an oil/air/fuel filter change.

Also, my acceleration can be very iffy sometimes. It seems like i press the pedal down and the car wont move and will chug along, and then suddenly rocket down the road. I have to play with the clutch and gas and push on and off to un-chug it.

I regularly use fuel injector cleaners, keep all fluid levels where they should be..etc. New spark plugs, o2 sensor...

I feel like my car is about to have a heart attack and needs a triple bypass. It just feels clogged and dirty and plugged up everywhere. I feel like i drive around with a huge anchor on the back of my car.

Any suggestions?

Oil in the airbox can be a result of leaking front of engine seals - if your breather from the top of the belt compartment to the airbox is in place. I'd get the belt cover off and have a look.

Also sounds like your TPS is shot. Try unplugging it and see if your symptoms change. It's the switch under the throttle body. Throttle body's at the intake end of the J-pipe. You could try cleaning the contacts and shooting some contact cleaner through it, but replacement may be better. My car did this when I got it back from a welding shop. The didn't disconnect the battery before welding. I unplugged the switch, drove home and got a new one. Problem gone.

As far as battery drain? Don' know and hard to find. Aftermarket stereos are bad for this.

If that breather is in place, you should remove it and cap off the two ends. Porsche issued a tech bulletin to remove it to prevent possible engine damage if the water pump leaks. Oil can also come from the oil spout region of the engine if your engine has too much pressure in the crankcase. Pull the J boot loose and see if it is full of oil. Also check for a vacuum leak...poor running could be a result of a vacuum leak.
