What is involved in replacing the gas tank on a 86 944 turbo ?
It has sprung a leak after last weekend at the track.

Drop the trans, pull the cover over the inlets and disconnect the couplings, disconnect the level sender, disconnect the fuel pump and drain the tank, take off the support straps.

It is leaking on the bottom, only the lowest part of the tank is wet.
Could it be some fittings or something else leaking ?

i've had 2 gas tank leaks in 944's, on my '84 and on my father's POS 83 that has done nothing but sit in the driveway. the solution both times was to loosen the hose coming out of the tank, and crank a bit on the threaded part that is going into the tank with an adjustable wrench or adjustable pliers (carefully of course, and with a rag). stopped the leak both times. just remember to re-tighten the fuel hose, the only reason i disconnected it was to prevent torque from twisting in the threaded part. you could get lucky with this one, the first time i saw the leak i was at school, 200 miles from home. went to the parking lot, saw a puddle, smelled gas.... i had basic tools with me, and it was an easy fix.
good luck!

BTW, you could try to repair the leak, welding usually works a treat ( I'm kidding!)

After checking it seems that the fuelpump itself is leaking , not at the line connections but leaking from the pos. terminal !
Anybody seen that before ?

are you sure its fuel pump?, if you are check your fuel line comming out of fuel pump, its between both terminals, check the surrounding areas, it it is your pump well either way if it has any fuel on any of the terminals, make sure you unplug your battery before you even play with the pump, last thing you want is the spark on that terminal.

The fuelwell where the hardline goes stays dry after i wipe it off , it looks like it comes from the possitive terminal.
At least that is what gets wet first at a rate of one drop per second

Could be the crush washer on the check valve too. If the lower (closest to pump) one leaks then it could manifest like that.

( I'm kidding!) Actually I have seen some one weld a tank useing gas welder with brass rods. He filled it full of water then welded it. I must admit I was standing well well back when I saw what he was welding. And was a little disapointed but greatly relieved when it didn't go bang.
