No start or high idle - Temp Sensor
With the temperature sensor plugged into its mate on the block, the motor wont start. I can crank and crank and it'll chug here and there but just wont seem to catch. Playin with the throttle helps, but it'll quickly idle down to a shudder and die.
With the temp sensor unplugged, it'll turn over first crank and instantly rev to 3000 rpm where it'll idle forever. The throttle is responsive at this point, but really slow to kick in. Bizarre, I know. Doctors, grab your scalpels. Its time to diagnose. |
The sensor plug is shorted. (more than likely corroded at the plug)
Put a meter on the leads on the plug to test. The wires shorted = ultra rich. The dme thinks its freezing out and tries to richen up the mixture. |
And I have a new one you can snag...email if you want it.

The block is from an '83...everything attached to the block is from my '86. Uses the same size plugin as everything else on the wiring harness. Perhaps theres a difference in calculations by the DME as its looking to measure block temp and not the water temp, right?

The DME temp sensor is the same for all 944's.
The gauge temp sender is different. Use the larger of the two pins on the gauge connector for the single pin on the early gauge temp sender. |
