Hit Problem replacing timing belt
 

I need a hint or two about how to pull the balance shaft belt pulley off the crankshaft.

I went to Schucks and got a gear puller, but the arms slip off the pulley before the pulley starts to move and the main bolt of the puller is buried between the fan shrouds.

Clark's Garage notes didn't say anything about needing a gear puller so I was wondering if there was another way of shifting the thing.

I'm also hoping that removing the pulley will let me see the bolts holding the sring tensioner.

This job is turning out to be a lot more painful than I expected. The first sign of trouble was the two threaded inserts spinning in the back cover instead of letting me unscrew the bolts.

One of the pulleys is the tensioner for the balance shaft belt. Its a 17mm nut on the pulley that loosens then you can take the belt of.

I used a gear puller from Sears, its a two jaw. Stick a stocket ontop of the crankshaft bolt hole so you dont kill the threads. You may need a second set of hands to help you line it up..also you will amost defenetley need to take the radiator fans out (its easy, only 6 bolts..10 minutes to remove them).

Tip #1 - remove fan housing. Three 10 mm bolts along top, and three along bottom. dicsonnect electricals, and remove from bottom.

Tip #2 - PB Blast. Spray PB Blast into shaft/gear in front, and behind gear, and tap on the shaft and then tap on the gear. The gear is probably stuck, (rust) on the key in the shaft. Re-apply PB Blast, and increase 'tap' to 'bang'.

I have never needed a gear puller to get the balance shaft gear off. I usually spray the center with some WD-40 or other suitable rust remover the give the gear a few smacks with a small hammer, alternating sides (i.e. left, right, top, bottom, repeat) until you can see it wobble a little bit then it usually just pulls right off by hand.
Then I use a small prybar to get the cam belt drive gear moving and it will usually pull off by hand.

If it's not leaking you don't need to remove anything.
