Any ideas on a weird noise?

Hey guys I need some input. I have rebuilt or replaced most stuff on my 84 in the last 3-4K miles including a clutch kit. I have a weird kind of high pitched ratteling when I have the clutch engaged and am not accelerating. There is an obvious kind of rattle coming from the front. If I push the clutch in it stops. Under load I don't hear it. It sounds like maybe a throw-out bearing. Any other ideas? The one I used was in an OE kit. Hopefully there is something else I have overlooked as I really don't feel like doing the clutch again right now.

sounds like the throw-out bearing. my car made that noise for the longest time, then quit after i did my clutch.



for about a week... d'oh!


i notice it most at lower rpms in gear, and during idling in the driveway or at stoplights.

just turn the radio up

Yeah, I was afraid of that. I do have a rockin box in the car so I do have that option.

A throw out bearing can rattle under two circumstances. The first (which is the worst) is it makes a noise when the clutch is pressed in. This means the bearing has rough surfaces on the race and is about to give you trouble. This obviously isn't the situation with yours. The second time it can make noise is it's not being used (clutch is out) and it's rattling around in there because there isn't any pressure on it. The thing to try here....make the car have the noise and then just put your toe on the clutch and push it down about a half inch or so until you feel a light pressure. This moves the throw out bearing into the pressure plate and stops it from bouncing around. If the noise quits, then that is the problem and we can find some ways to keep the bearing just a little tighter so it doesn't rattle. If that doesn't make the noise stop, the throw out bearing probably isn't the problem.

my car makes the same sort of noise, its a high pitched rattle. I hear it mostly when the car is stopped. Clutch travel has no effect on it, it will do it with the clutch out or in. but the noise definatly goes away once the engine has a load on it.

I find it does it most once its warmed up.

strangly i shot some WD40 into the AC clutch, i think some over spray got on one of the belts and the rattle stopped, im not sure if it was a coincidence or if it was the AC compressor. Regardless the noise came right back after a few drives.

If you look into this and come up with anything post back.

It's definately possible to make the noise go away in two ways on mine. (1) is push the clutch in all the way. (2) is put the engine under load. I really hope it's something as simple as the A/C belt. I may take mine off and try it, it only takes a few minutes to do it. F...it, I need a new belt in the Spring anyway, I'll just cut it and see if it helps.

the AC belt also drives the alternator, soooo if you cut that, your alternator will cease to alternate

same noise in neutral ? when u rev the throtle pulley a little does it change ? with ac on /off ?
spray little of wd40 on the belt ... see if it goes away .
hmm cant think of anything else ...

No noise in neutral. I am going to have to take my neighbor for a ride (after the ice and snow is gone). He has been a Porsche mechanic @ Plaza Motors for 25 years and can probably tell me pretty quickly. It's kind of tough to describe something in print. Thanks for all of the ideas folks.
