car turns over without clutch being engaged.

Is it normal for the 944 to turn over without pressing clutch pedal? I know on my Jeep nothing will turn over until i press clutch pedal, but on this 944 it turns over.

Mine does. I just always make sure the clutch is in because it once caught me by surprise.

the FIRST time i started this car, never having driven a manual transmission car before, was still in the PO's driveway.... I almost put it through his garage by starting it in gear! came within inches.. lol

the 944's didn't have the safety-feature of a clutch-in ignition.

All this time I thought it had to have the clutch in, I'll be darned! No matter however as mine only runs when you push it....;(....
Good habit to get into having the clutch in, saves the engine from having to spin the driveshaft especially in frigid climates.

It doesn't make this car the one to teach your children in though. When Candace was 10, I started teaching her to drive in mine. Forgot to tell her to push the clutch in before starting it. Not good. It was in my church parking lot in Arkansas with a gravel parking lot (yeah, I'm from the country). She paniced...throttle went to the floor..you know...it's really hard to reach everthing across the console! We hit the pavement on the street...thankfully nobody was coming (like I said, I lived in the country) but the tires kept spinning...left a really nice set of black marks. We were headed straight for the cemetery fence when I finally calmed down enough to reach over and pull her leg off the accelerator. I told her well....if we would have died, we were already next to the cemetery. She gets really mad at me when I tell that story! Being a smart a**, I got out and asked her if she knew of a place to get a new set of back tires! So Steve, next time you email her, ask her just how long a 944 can leave a black mark....or how many doughnuts it can do in a church parking lot!

It's a nice feature to have if your clutch slave fails in traffic...

Yea, they do that.

There's no starter lock-out provided on the clutch. I suppose if someone was motivated enough you could run a circuit through the existing clutch position switch that normally hooks into the cruise control system, but to my knowledge nobody has done it yet.

Hahaha thats actually how I limped it home when mine completely failed <1 mile from my house! Just drove in first the whole way home on the back roads and pulled it out of gear and killed her when I got to the drive way Probably not the best thing in the world for the starter, but it worked...

My 1987 944 turns over without the clutch depressed. It is normal but you should always ensure that either its in neutral or that the clutch is depressed....
