odometer gear

Does the 1988 automatic have the plastic gear that strips often?

My speedo works ok but no odometer.

I wanted to order it before I pull out everything. ( I could not find it listed in Pelican )

Anybody got a link to the gear?

Also any tips on pulling the horn button off to get to the s wheel nut? I have pulled on it to the point of all most breaking!

I assume the speedo is the same as a stickshift; if so, then yes. I don't believe you can buy the gear separately through normal channels but I got one from

http://www.odometergears.com/

and it has been working fine for the past three years or so.

"the book" says you have to pull the wheel to get the cluster out, but you really don't if you are careful. It is tight, but it will come out.

I agree with nate...don't take the wheel off. I have pulled mine numerous times without pulling the wheel. It's really pretty easy and only takes about ten minutes to get the cluster out. If you need specific instructions let me know. The hardest part is finding all the screws in the cover...some are well hidden in the ac vent.

Thanks, Too cold right now, too much salt!!!!.

Around here they really go overboard. 1 " snow and they out down 2" salt. Well maybe not that much, but we had a little snow here five days ago and there is still salt dust at every intersection. LOL

Yes I got it out no problem. While I have it out I was going to look for what might be causing the oil and temp gauges to peg. Thump on the cluster and it causes them to be right.

In the photo below at the 2 places marked is what looks like corrosion or crud of some type.
Could that be causing the fluctuating gauges? And should I attempt to clean those areas? And if so with what?

In the photo below at the marks. Is something missing? Its on the side near the oil pressure. Maybe lights not needed because its a auto maybe?

The easiest way to clean them is with an pencil eraser. If a little more abrasion is required, use an ink eraser.
